Note:	Lisa P reported that upon arriving for an observation, she sighted several workman on top of the tower and they were removing the nest. After a discussion with these workman, she was told they had a permit to remove the nest as modifications were to be made to the cell tower. Apparently it was assumed this was an inactive nest. The persons in charge of permitting did not know the history of this very productive nest nor did they know the pair had been sighted a few times around the nest in the prior 2 weeks. Nesting season is just beginning . Sadly, this pair have lost their longtime nest. Hopefully upon completion of the “modifications”, they will rebuild. This nest site will continue to be monitored for any signs of rebuilding there or in a nearby location.

Note:	Kathy A reports: 2/17/26 So far I haven’t observed any activity at the nest. The 7858 osprey typically arrive mid February but were delayed last year, maybe because it was a cold winter, so I’m thinking that may be the case again this year. The nest needs a lot of repair.

Luckily, I was there at the perfect moment and the mate flew in, I believe it to be the male, but it is kind of far away and I could not discern male and female with my binoculars. They were definitely a pair by their interactions. I will bring my camera next time.

But then I walked around to try to get different angles for photos, and I missed Lucy leaving the nest, fly into onto a nearby branch. Then I could not locate Ricky. So at this point, I don’t think incubation is occurring unless Ricky went into the nest to sit on the eggs while Lucy was on the branch. I just didn’t observe them trading places.

Note:	Sheila B reports: Feb 24, 10:17 – 11:25 AM: When I arrived, two adults (male and female) were both standing on the light fixture actively watching around the nest. There were a couple of sticks already in place (nest must be rebuilt totally from scratch). Both of the osprey started chirping loudly while looking into the sky. Above them was another osprey circling directly above the nest site. They continued loud warning calls for a short time and the other osprey flew off. Sam left the nest and brought back several sticks – one immediately fell to the ground but the other two stayed up. Sammie remained on the nest light the entire time. Sam flew off and shortly after Sammie flew away also. Almost immediately a crow came to poke around in the sticks and it knocked one small one off. Both osprey were still gone when I left at 11:25. NOTE: Last year Sam and Sammie didn’t start building their nest until March 18 so they are starting almost 3 weeks earlier this year. Also, the whole parking area where the nest light is located is now completely cordoned off to keep cars/people out for upcoming work that will be done for the grocery store moving in. I am hoping the increased human activity and loss of nearby trees will not stop Sam and Sammie.

They were both quietly calling periodically and looking around. 3:22 Sammie standing on the nesting platform looking around. A friend came by and told me he had seen a third osprey harassing Sam and Sammie earlier in the day. They both chased the intruder away. He also observed Sam and Sammie mating. March 5, 10:40 AM – Construction work is going on in the parking lot near the nest but it does not appear to be influencing nesting activities. More nesting material had been added since yesterday. Sammie standing on the nest looking around. Sam soaring around the area and Sammie gives some quiet calls while watching him fly. Sam continues to circle very high then flies down to the nest and they mate. Sam leaves the nest and perches in one of the pines next to the Goodwill pond. He was still there and Sammie was on the nest when I left.

The next time, March 13, that I saw them together it was a brief encounter which appeared to be mating behavior. But I haven't seen them together anymore or any sign of nest rebuilding yet. NOTE: Based on this update, we have confirmed the bonded pair back was as of 3/3 (reinforced by the 3/11 update) and mating 3/13.

Note:	Sheila B reports: Sammie standing in nest, lots of rapid calls and actively looking around the nest area. Male osprey flew into nest area but Sammie flapped her wings stopping him from landing. He went to neighboring tree and perched for several minutes. Sammie continues calling and looking at perched osprey male then around the area. Perched male flies back to nest and both ospreys flapping wings in agitation. Male lands at one side of nest with head down in submissive position. After a few minutes Sammie starts to flap wings, call loudly and move toward male (intruder) aggressively. She continues calling and flapping her wings until male intruder leaves the nest and returns to perch in nearby tree. Sammie continues calling and looking around area. Intruder flies toward nest again and second male osprey arrives making loud warning calls. Males circle nesting area until one finally flies away. Remaining male goes to nearby tree to perch. Sammie continues with soft, lest frequent calls. There were a couple more incidents with a second male showing up but is driven off the nest by Sammie. When I left, one male is perched in a nearby tree and Sammie is standing in nest

Note:	Sheila B reports: Sammie standing in the nest chirping. Male flies in and Sammie speeds up calling but it was not loud. Male makes loud slow-paced calls (warning?). A second male osprey flies into the area but does not approach nest. First male osprey flies toward second male osprey then the second osprey leaves the area. First male returns to the nest and Sammie continues quiet chirping. Male leaves the nest to perch on a branch in pine by the Goodwill store (this was one of Sam’s favorite perches during last season). About ten minutes later, Sammie perches on an adjacent branch and continues chirping quietly. Sammie shifts and stands with her back flat and head down while continuing quiet chirps (it looks like she is solicitating mating). Male does not respond but keeps actively scanning the sky. They were still in the tree when I left.

This evening I didn't think there were any osprey there but after a while I spotted a white head bobbing up and down barely above the rim of the nest. I believe she was eating a catch. It appears that the nest is rebuilt, possibly wider and/or deeper than before since I could barely see her above the edge when she was eating. See the attached photo of her sitting/standing in their big fluffy nest! NOTE: Based on the recent observations of Mom down in the nest and barely visible, it is assumed that incubation is underway. It probably started between the 11th and the 20th and will be recorded as starting the 15. This is just our best estimate.

Note:	Steve W reports: Even though she is not visible usually, when the male briefly visited the nest, you could see her moving around. He did not bring any treats and they only quietly responded to each other. She is hunkered down incubating and not noticed leaving, although a few days previously both birds were off the nest flying around with some commotion. A third Osprey was seen flying by high and may have caused all the commotion from high above or with a lower flyby. I was not sure if that was an intruder of one of the pair on the low flyby. NOTE: based on this second observation of incubation we will indicate incubation is underway as of 3/15, splitting the difference between the unsure date and this one.

Sam is sitting down low in the nest and Sam chases a grackle away from the nest. 12:54 PM - Sammie still low and flat-backed in the nest. 1:15 Sammie took short flight around the nest area. She was followed closely by a grackle until she got back to the nest then it flew away. Sammie started digging and aerating the nest then settled back in even lower than before. When I left at 1:22, Sammie was still in the same low position in the nest.

Note:	Paul P reports: Yesterday, after over a week of not seeing either of the osprey on or near the nest I can now confirm that the female osprey is on the nest and probably incubating her eggs! I could hear the osprey but could not see either of them near the nest. I stood around the nest tree and finally saw the female osprey stand and fluff up her wings and then re-settle in the nest. No photos but I definitely saw her on the nest. At this time I believe that she may have been on the nest with her egg(s) for at least the past week. I am basing this on the fact that I had not seen either of the osprey in the nest tree in over a week. Second adult osprey flies into nesting area and they start flying in circles with one osprey giving loud, sharp warning calls. Fish crow flies close to nest and Sammie’s head pops up above the edge of nest edge. She flies out and chased crow away then returns to nest. Meanwhile two other ospreys continue circling each other and they gradually fly out of the nesting area. Sammie settles back very low in nest (probably incubating). She gave a few short chirps. 4:45 Sammie still low in nest and no sign of Sam. 5:15 Sammie still in nest and no Sam. She gives a few chirps and a second osprey flies near the parking lot but keeps on going. A short while later, two adults circling each other show up in another location near the nest but do not interact with Sammie and leave area. Crows gather nearby in nearby tree. Sammie stays alert and frequently looks around the area and above while occasionally calling. Still no sign of Sam.

Sammie takes fish to nearby pine to eat. Sam stays at nest but keeps calling and looking above and around nest area. Sammie returns to the nest with partially eaten fish. Both Sam and Sammie calling loudly and looking around the nest area. Second male osprey arrives and is seen circling the nest. (Intruder male has one dark feather in the middle of the tail and I am positive I have seen this osprey disrupting the nest at least one other time). Sam leaves the nest and flies right next to the intruder which positions Sam between the intruder and the nest. The competing males are at the height of the nest. Sammie flies out of the nest briefly. Sam and intruder continue flying close to one another, gaining height and before long they leave the nest area. Sammie returns to the nest and settles down into incubation position. 12:17 PM: Sammie still in incubating position and no sign of Sam or intruder male.

A crow zips by, Sam flies out and the crow pursues him. Sammie remains at the nest. She gets up and looks like she is either rolling an egg or aerating the nest. Note: While there was a report from a neighbor of hearing "babies in the nest", 3 different observers are in agreement that there are no young yet. We are only assuming incubation is underway and that the Mom is down so far she isn't visible.

Note:	The nest is in a pine tree that the property owner wants to remove because of damage to his driveway, To do this a town permit can only be issued when the nest is inactive. For this reason, Joanne V met with the property owner to assess the nest and to see if there was a suitable nearby pine in which to place a platform. It was determined that there is no good spot in the vicinity for a platform. The community will require the home owner to replace the pine with an oak, not another pine. It is unclear if incubation is underway. Initial reports indicate possible incubation about 3/31 but it has not been confirmed. There are osprey around the nest but there has been no further observation of Mom in the nest incubating. We will continue to monitor the nest, and if there are no clear signs that the nest indeed has incubation/chicks the owner will apply for a permit after Memorial Day. Even once the permit is issued, it will take some time before it is removed. If there is conclusive incubation prior to Memorial Day, the home owner will have to wait until the end of the nesting season.

We hope to get more confirming evidence in the next update but the change in behavior indicated at least one egg has hatched.

Intruder male (with dark central tail stripe seen on several occasions) flew over the nest. Sammie starts to call. Crow chased the intruder who then went to the Palmetto Electric Signal Tower osprey nest site (where a lone osprey was perched). Osprey there chased the intruder off. Sam stayed perched the entire time. Nesting area stayed quiet.

Note:	Kathy A reports: Nest 7858 - I have not observed any sign of nestlings yet - i.e. no feeding behavior or standing in the nest or shifting around, however I did see something different a couple of evenings ago. I didn't see Mom's head above the rim of the nest as usual and was wondering if either osprey was there. But then I detected a barely perceptible movement which was a tail feather coming up slightly and briefly. Shortly thereafter the mate arrived at the nest - without a fish even though it was dinner time - and it was clearly Mom with her very defined brown chest. After a short greeting, Dad exchanged positions with her then quickly left the nest appearing glad to be relieved of his duties! See photos attached. Another evening Mom was waiting in the nest, head barely visible and waiting patiently, but then began urgently calling. Within a couple of minutes Dad appeared with a big fish and dropped it in the nest. I think he must have been already snacking on it in a nearby tree in order to respond to her plea so quickly

I have only seen the top of Mom’s head once . NOTE: There are still signs that incubation may be underway, especially since one osprey seems to be standing guard above the nest. Signs include April 1st glimpse of one down in the nest and April 24th chirping from the nest. It is a deep nest and Mom could be so far down that she is not often visible.

This whole situation makes me very sad as I did see them both together and also mating once earlier in March.

Note:	Kathy A reports: - After about 15 minutes of observation, seeing Mom's head barely visible above the rim of the nest, Dad flew in with dinner. At first I thought they were both eating together but turns out Dad was just tugging at some sticks and doing a little tidying up instead of eating. Mom ate heartily - head quickly down, then up - and chomp, chomp - swallow. Several times she shook her head side to side as if something was stuck in her mouth/beak - perhaps a bone? I did not see any sign of her feeding nestlings at all and I waited and watched for about a half hour after dinner arrived. Hopefully soon. This nest usually has indications of nestlings by Mother's Day so I'm hopeful the tradition continues!

Oscar in nest for shorter periods and sometimes both are in the nest.. 5/6 Oprah in nest alone and Osprey flying above her but I don’t think it was Oscar ? No eggs yet. I did some reading and it said Females may not have eggs due to various reasons. I think this third Osprey who shows up occasionally may be the cause. When he is around Oscar and Oprah seem on alert and agitated. I feel so sad for them when they’re in the nest, esp Oprah. I’ll keep watching.

Note:	Kathy A reports: Nest 7858 - Last evening (5/7) when I arrived I didn't see any sign of osprey in the nest, however after about 10 minutes Mom appeared upright near the front of the nest. She maintained this position of a long time occasionally looking down in the nest in front of her. After a while she began calling for dinner. She called and called and Dad finally appeared and perched at the tip top of the tall pine across the lagoon from the nest and she quieted down. Dad was on the hunt and soon dove into the lagoon for a fish but was not successful. I waited until nearly dark but he did not return and Mom began calling again - and still looking down into the nest occasionally. I hope he returned to the nest with dinner because based on Mom's upright posture and her looking down into the nest I believe there is a hatchling! Hoping to see feeding behavior the next time! See attached photos NOTE: Based on this description and mom looking down into the nest, we are assuming that hatching has occurred although feeding was not directly seen. We will guess that hatching took place around the 4th.

Note:	Kathy A reports: Nest 7858 - Hurray! And just like clockwork I got my very first glimpse of a baby osprey in the nest today - on Mother's Day! When I arrived Mom was standing in the nest - with her back to me for most of the time- but I could tell she was eating (I saw pieces of fish in her mouth as she occasionally turned her head to the side) and she may have been feeding as well but I was unable to see what she was doing from my perspective. Dad was also at the nest but barely visible to the left, behind limbs and pine needles - I was only aware of his presence by the subtle movement of his white head through the limbs. After a long while Mom gradually repositioned while tugging at some sticks and material in the nest and that's when I saw the baby peek his head barely above the rim of the nest. I got a glimpse of a tiny head pop up several times in the same spot in the nest so right now I can confirm that there is one baby. See photo (baby is at the bottom left of Mom)

Note:	Kathy A reports: Nest 7858 - More good news! This evening I spotted 2 babies in the nest with Mom as they patiently waited for Dad to bring dinner and he did not disappoint! He arrived with a half eaten fish and Mom immediately began feeding the little ones - each one politely waiting his turn. Dad stayed in the nest behind Mom most of the time. This little family is doing well so far. See photos (it's too hard to choose just one to send) ? A side note, as I biked over to my observation point, an osprey was loudly and repeatedly calling - extremely loud - and I assumed it was Mom being anxious about their dinner. But then I saw an osprey on a limb behind the nest doing the frantic calling. Mom wasn't upset or disturbed and Dad didn't react to it after he brought dinner, even though the calling continued -but not as frequently - so I'm not sure who this third osprey was so close to Nest 7858.

At first there was only the one Osprey, but as I waited around a second one flew in, I think bringing dinner, but I did not get a clear picture to be positive. I did observe what looked like the feeding process or at least preparation. I could not see any little heads though. It is a deep-welled nest. A picture is attached of the two Osprey. I hope to get back to the nest on the weekend or during the week. NOTE: Based on the observation and the photo, it does look like feeding was in progress. The little ones may still be very hard to see in this deep nest at this stage.

Note:	Christine B reports: When I arrived at this nest I observed one adult Osprey perched below the nest on the metal structure. He was chirping loudly. I also heard some faint chirping coming from the nest. The adult Osprey took off heading over to the Club Course of Sea Pines. I waited for about 10 minute and I observed an Osprey come from the CC direction, circling above the nest to achieve lift. I hoped that dad was returning but he flew over to the ocean side of Sea Pines. Of course I don't know if it was the same Osprey. I waited 45 minutes hoping for his return but he did not return in that time frame. NOTE: We assume the two young were down in the nest and the chirping from the nest backs this up.

Note:	Jim H reports: We have had a team of 3 watching daily. Osprey have been observed near and even on the nest on multiple occasions. I watched Mon to Thursday this week and saw a single osprey in the tree on Monday , Tuesday and Wednesday mornings but not often later in the day. On Thursday I was told that there was an osprey on the nest around 6 am. I went to observe the nest around 7 am. There was an osprey on the nest which flew from the nest with nesting material in its talons. We have not been able to actually see an osprey down in the nest. We should know if anything is actually going to result in the next couple of weeks. NOTE: Reports of an osprey ON the nest lead us to think it may be incubating.

It is unclear if Oprah is no longer fertile or what the cause may be. Last year, she did produce 3 eggs, although sadly, they were all predated. As this nest is easily observed with the camera, should anything change the data can be modified. But it will currently be shut down for the season.

Note:	It has been difficult to establish a timeline for this nest as it was not discovered until very late in the season. The first observation indicated an osprey present on a branch in the nest tree. A couple of weeks later, an injured Osprey chick (with brown eyes) was discovered on the ground near this nest. However, there are other nests in the vicinity so it’s not possible to determine from which nest this osprey originated. No other activity has been documented. Given this, the nest will be closed out for the season. Hopefully next year with monitoring commencing at the start, it will be a productive nest.

When I went behind some bushes out of her sight she flew back into the nest. So I assume she has hatchling(s) there. NOTE: Based on this observation, we are recording at least 1 nestling. Our best guess based on incubation report is that the eggs may have hatched about May 8th, but that is just an estimate. If that is the case, the young would be too small to see for another week or so.

Note:	Kathy A reports: Nest 9117 - I understand you've marked this nest inactive but thought you might find this interesting - that this osprey has been waiting patiently for three full months for his mate to return - the first sighting at the nest this year was March 3 when there were two ospreys by the nest and then what appeared as a fight between those two ensued and then a few days later, what appeared as an attempt to mate once. Clearly they were not a pair and I guess this lone osprey was not ready for a new mate - I hope he'll return again next year and maybe by then be willing to accept a new mate. But for now he's still waiting ❤️?

NOTE: Again, we assume the two young were chirping but way down in the nest.

Both Sam and Sammie were in the nest feeding, eating and poking around when I got the shot. Didn’t see the head until I downloaded the pictures. This picture was taken looking from the Goodwill side.

Note:	Kathy A reports: Nest 7858 - I've been waiting to send a report because I've only seen one nestling since all the rain and wind last weekend - I've been so worried. FINALLY last evening I saw both nestlings with Mom and all appeared well. Mom was feeding the one nestling in view and after about 30 minutes the other nestling came to the front of the nest and took his turn being fed. I've missed seeing Dad recently but it always appears that dinner is already there and being enjoyed by Mom and babies when I arrive. See photo attached (best I could get of all together)

Note:	Paul P reports: Today I saw the chick for the first time this morning. It is pretty large, I would say at least a foot long from top of head to bottom. I am making this estimate on seeing a large portion of its body in the nest. It was sitting in the nest with its mother hovering very close and almost on top of it. After she flew away I could see the little one all by itself. I did not see any other activity in the nest so I think that there is just one baby in the nest.

Note:	Mary Ellen B reports: 12704: One osprey was on a branch near the nest. A second was in the nest moving around with its head down and tail up. Based on the timeline and behavior, I believe there are hatchlings. NOTE: Based on this and the previous update, we do believe there is at least one hatchling. We will assume that hatching occurred May 31, the first day reported with this info.

I could hear at least one other osprey calling nearby. No movement in the nest - I assume it's empty now. Note:	Diane R reports: On Friday I noticed quite a bit of wing flapping inside the nest and then on Saturday I saw it sitting on a branch just outside of the nest. Today the chirping was going on for a long time so I went out to see what was going on. It was coming from a nearby tree but I could locate it. All of a sudden it flew from the tree back to the nest. don't know if it happens that quickly or if I didn't observe the action earlier. NOTE: Given the timeline and this observation, fledging has clearly occurred

Note:	Sheila B reports: 10:20 AM – Sammie in nest and one chick can be seen moving around. Sam flies to Goodwill pine carrying a very big wriggling fish and a crow flanks him all the way in. The crow perches very close to Sam and his still moving fish. Crow edges closer to Sam but he flaps his wings and the crow retreated. Sam starts to eat. Sammie flies from the nest and returns with a small stick to add to the nest. Sam continues to eat and watch. Over the next couple minutes, two chick heads show up and one is significantly smaller. Sam finally brings the fish to the nest. Sammie starts to eat and feed chicks.

Note:	Paul L reports: I observed the nest on and off for over two hours today between 1-3pm and observed a female in the nest occasionally poking her head out in view and spreading her wings. The male partner was observed in foraging flight nearby and returned to the nest 30 minutes later carrying a fish in his talon which he dropped off at the nest. I was not able to observe any nestlings with my binoculars but I took a live Photo of the nest (attached) that when viewed in expanded live mode appears to show 2-3 small heads bobbing in the nest. I believe those to be nestlings. NOTE: When zooming on the nest, it appears there are 2 or 3 little visible heads which would indicate they are probably round 3- 4 weeks old. While there may be 3, only 2 have been recorded until we can confirm. Based on seeing the heads of the young and that they do not appear to be fuzzy/light colored, we will guess that hatching took place around May 15th. Again, this is a new nest and this is the best guess based on the limited data.

Note:	Christine B reports: I observed one adult Osprey perched above the nest . I could hear some very soft chirping. I waited and Dad flew off towards the ocean and Mom popped up from the nest flapping her wings. She then hunkered down in the nest and I could no longer see her body. I waited for 15 mins. but Dad did not return while I was there NOTE: We are assuming that there are still young down in the nest with Mom.

Note:	Marie M reports: I observed the nest on 6/10 and 6/11. I did not see any activity in the nest. I usually view the nest around 1 pm NOTE: Since we believe incubation began about May 15th, it is likely that the female is hunkered down in the nest incubating. If the incubation date is about right, we should expect to see a change in the Mom's behavior (IE Standing up head bobbing/feeding motion into the nest) maybe the end of next week/the start of the following week.

Note:	Sheila B reports: 8:45 AM – Sammie in nest and Sam in tall pine near CVS. Sammie flies out of nest and returns with good sized stick. (Sides of nest increasing in height fairly regularly lately.) Sammie calls softly and Sam flies off over Planet Fitness – gone fishing? 9:24 AM - Sammie chirping then flies off nest leaving it unattended but she can be heard chirping in the distance. While Sammie is away, on small poop shot comes out of nest and shortly after another larger poop shot comes from another location in the nest. Both chicks are obviously being fed. 9:31 AM - Sammie is still off nest and largest chick is up looking around over the nest rails. Sammie comes back with another large stick and the large chick is there watching. Chick goes down in nest and Sammie stands with her wings partially spread, possibly shading chicks.

Note:	Marge I. and friends report: Three of us checked the nest on 06/09 O6/10 and O6/11. None of us saw or heard any birds. NOTE: This nest is puzzling. If hatching was about when we think, April 29th, and feeding reported on 4/30 and 5/5, there should be at least one good sized youngster in the nest and the parents should still be bringing fish to the nest. The lack of seeing the young in the nest is a concern. I think it is doubtful that fledging has happened because no good sized youngsters have been seen and also fledging is about 50+ days after hatching so it would be a bit early for this to have happened. Lack of activity in the past few weeks could be signs that the young didn't make it and the adults left. Again, there is no way to be sure about this.
