Date Nest Watcher Adults Eggs Young Observations
January 8 9022 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Sue A & Diane R both report that one osprey has returned to the nest.
January 13 6211 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: The nest is still in tact, but can use some sprucing up. No sign of this pair near the nest as yet. This pair did not begin nesting last year until early March.
January 15 5395 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: This nest is in tact, but could use some sprucing up. No sign yet of either of the pair returning to the nest. Last year it wasn’t until March, but some years it was February.
January 16 2521 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Lisa P reports no activity.
January 19 7763 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Marge I reported: Checked on it on 01/19 at 3 pm. Nest is intact but no birds or activity yet. My birds historically show up in March but I will check once a week.
January 20 2521 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Lisa P reports there is still no activity. NOTE: This pair returned in January last season, so there is some expectation that it will again be an early nesting pair.
January 24 2517 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Sandy P reports: initial check. No activity.
January 24 2518 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Sandy P reports: initial check, no activity.
January 24 2514 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: This is my first year monitoring this nest. The previous monitor had done so for several years, but is now unable to participate in this program. This nest is fairly obstructed with trees at this time. There is a camera, however, and a blog which is maintained by Palmetto Electric where the nest is located on one of their signal towers. I will be relying on these for my reporting. Currently the camera shows the nest and no activity. It looks like it needs to be spruced up.
January 25 9196 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Sue F: There is no nest on the platform currently. In December I could have sworn I saw a male Osprey hanging out twice but I haven't seen anything since and I usually pass that way a couple of times a week so I assume I was mistaken...or he came and left.
January 25 2521 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: No activity.
January 26 7016 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Mary Kelly reported: Nest 7016: observed on January 26, 2025 at 12:13 pm, the nest was intact. No ospreys were observed.

January 26 6981 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Christine B: January 26, 2026 nest# 6981 afternoon Nest # 6981 is intact but will need some sprucing up . I drive past this nest almost every day and there has been no activity. This couple are usually late arrivals.
January 26 2517 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Sandy P reports: I know the photo is not great but as you can see, we have an Osprey on the outside of the nest and he appeared to be eating a fish…. I think it was our male, Oscar, no striations on the chest. This is very early . I suppose it’s too late for the camera now…… NOTE: This nest's camera has not been operational since 2022
January 27 2508 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Carol U reprots: Nest 2508 1/27/25. 12:30pm. Initial observation for 2025. The nest is empty. Nest is intact but will need some sprucing up when the birds return. Note: the weather has been extremely cold and approximately 3 inches of snow for the past 6 days.

Note: Carol U reprots: Nest 9137 1/27/25 1pm Initial observation for 2025. The nest is empty but intact. The nest will need some rebuilding when the birds return. Weather may be delaying their return as it’s been freezing and snow on the ground for the past 6 days.
January 27 2517 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
January 28 7229 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: John G: Last Tuesday there was nothing going on at nest 7229. According to Bob Clemens, the nest has been empty the last two years. Because I get out to golf a couple of times a week (generally Tuesday and Thursday), I'll be able to see if anything changes.
January 28 7019 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Alan B: This nest was completely gone when I went over to look for it this morning. I’ll check in on it periodically to see when/if the birds return if they’re going to rebuild it.
January 28 4668 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Marie M reports: I was at the museum this afternoon. No sign of ospreys. 3 American crows were sitting on the platform.
January 28 6211 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: Although no ospreys were observed in the nest or on any branch of the nesting tree, a female osprey was seen flying around the nearby pond. Obviously, there’s no way to determine if that was Lucy or one of the ospreys from nearby nests (there are 4 in close proximity to each other). It is still early for this pair to mate.
January 29 8028 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Mary Ellen B: We observed two ospreys in the tree with the nest (8028) on Wednesday, January 29th.
January 29 9248 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N

February 8 9117 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Kathy A: I check nest 9117 everyday since it’s outside my window and haven’t seen any activity at all yet but that pair usually comes kind late - sometime in March.
February 8 7858 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Kathy A: I’ve checked nest 7858 3 times and while no Osprey appear by or in the nest yet, two nights ago I heard an Osprey calling loudly and realized he (male) was in the tree right above my head! It may have been one of the 7858 Osprey since they often hang out in this particular tree during the nesting season when not on the nest - it’s diagonally across the lagoon from nest 7858. I’ll keep checking back as the pair is usually back mid February. And this photo may be the male from 7858 - he’s been hanging by our lagoon frequently and often fishes here- but there are so many Osprey in Sea Pines it’s difficult to know for sure if he’s from our nests

Note: Joanne V reports: no activity yet, although many osprey are flying about (4 nests in the area, so unclear which nests these osprey use). It was observed that one of the branches on which PO typically likes to sit has been broken off. But I’m sure he’ll find another.

February 14 2515 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Sheila B reprots: The nest light fixture still has no evidence of nest building. However, when I arrived there was an osprey standing on a neighboring light fixture eating a fish. The osprey was observed from 3:40 – 4:08 PM. I was able to see chest markings and there were only had a few dark feathers in the center of its chest so I concluded it was a male. He appeared to be healthy (good appetite, fluid movements and tidy plumage). He actively looked around the area while he was eating. Since he was not seen in the nesting light fixture, I am not sure if it is from this nest or one of the other osprey nests in this area.
February 15 2583 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N

February 16 2550 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Wendy D: As last year, the highschool is still under heavy construction. Constance did not return last year, and as we discussed, it was likely due to the construction activity, lights, noise, and heavy equipment. She always came in February in previous years and sadly there is no sign of her again this year. I hope we see her return, but I believe it is doubtful.

I'm not 100% certain if this is mom or dad - this osprey has some brown spots on its chest but not very distinctive- and I remember the mom's necklace was darker and more prominent. Attached is a photo.

Note: Sheila B reports: Today about 3:30 PM, I took a cruise by the Sam’s nest site - nothing going on there. However, I did notice one Osprey on the Palmetto Electric signal tower. When I checked their camera, I could identify the Osprey as a female. The remains of last year’s nest was only some scattered sticks so lots of work to do there. About 5:45 PM I checked the camera again and two Osprey were on the platform. They were just standing and looking around but having no interaction. I could not identify the sex of either bird. I have attached a screenshot of the nest from 5:52 PM (the nest camera is incorrect).

Note: Joanne V reports: visited this nest today and initially thought (from a distance) that one of the pair might be on a branch in the nesting tree. As I came closer, I realized it was an eagle. The eagle hung out for about 30 minutes and then flew away. I checked back 5 hours later and watched as the eagle flew back onto one of the branches. He only stayed for about 15 minutes. Still no sign of either osprey pair, but it's early yet for this nest. The photo is of the eagle.

Note: Joanne V reports: Observation from the osprey webcam showed both ospreys in the "nest" this morning. The "nest" is mostly bare so they were standing on the grate. There is minimal nesting material left from last season. So far there is no indication they have attempted to bring in new material .
March 1 9248 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Diane H: March 1: 9:40 am to 9:55 am. Found MO sitting tall on the side of the nest. She eventually spread her wings from that position, and pulled them back in as I noticed PO flying in from the nearby trees. PO circled the nest and flew in close, then returned to the trees. MO then joined him, and I could see them flying together in the distance.

March 1 2521 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: While not the assigned monitor, I was by this nest with my camera this morning so took some pictures. When I arrived, both ospreys were in the nest. About 10 minutes later, dad (I presume) flew out of the nest and mom remained. It is not clear yet if they have mated and/or if eggs are incubating.
March 1 7293 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Mary K: Nest 7293: on March 1, 2025, at 2:00 PM, a bird with white head and brown body, was observed perched on the structure by the nest. It looked around for a few minutes then flew away. I returned at 6:00 PM and observed what appeared to be the same bird perched on the structure by the nest. The bird then flew to a nearby tree. Below are photos of what appears to be a bald eagle.

March 2 8813 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Jim H: Nest 8813 - one osprey flew into the nest, a second osprey seen standing near the nest. Too high to actually see into the nest but this appears to be an active nesting.
March 2 7858 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Kathy A: Still seeing only one Osprey at 7858 - I’ve seen him several times now either alone on the limb by the nest or in the nest - - and again today standing in the nest but no mate yet. Maybe the cold weather is slowing down her return? The pair is usually back together by middle to late February.
March 2 9117 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Kathy A: Last week I saw one osprey on the limb by Nest 9117 however I have not seen anymore activity or osprey there
March 3 8889 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Mollie K: Still no activity and some people staying said they have not seen an osprey.
March 3 2515 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Sheila B reports: When I arrived at the nesting site an osprey was already standing on the fixture. With closer inspection using binoculars, there was a definite necklace indicating it was female. She stood quietly on the nesting platform looking around the area. About 3:40 she made a few soft chirps and another osprey (I believe a male – no visible chest markings) flew down to the platform, briefly touched down then took off. While the second osprey flew in and exited, the female was flapping her wings while remaining in a standing position. When the 2nd osprey flew off, it flew in a spiral pattering gaining height. There was 3rd osprey in the sky as well but there was no interaction between it and the other two osprey. When I left at 4:30, the female was still standing on the nest platform. No visible nesting material was seen.
March 4 2514 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: observation via the webcam shows 2 adult ospreys on the nest structure. There remains little nesting material on the grate of the signal tower.
March 4 7147 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Carol B: Haven"t seen the osprey at nest 7147 yet
March 4 9117 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Kathy A: Early this morning I saw one Osprey standing in Nest 9117 - he flew back and forth several times and brought a couple of sticks and arranged them in the nest - but I haven't seen the mate or him anymore since this morning.
March 4 7019 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Alan B: The female osprey is continuing to rebuild the nest. A few more sticks every day now. Still no sign of the male. Observed most recently on 3/4/25.
March 4 9270 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Mollie K: one osprey sighted. Looked like the male. Was flying back and forth bringing new sticks to the nest.
March 4 2521 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Lisa P reports: Waited 10 minutes and just as I was thinking no activity, one adult head popped up for a few seconds. Barely visible. NOTE: It is highly probably that eggs are now being incubated. The dates line up and and it is very typical for a mother osprey to stay low in the nest during incubation. March 4 will be recorded as initiation and this nest will continue to be closely monitored. (Joanne V)
March 4 9089 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Jean F reports: First sighting of an Osprey at the nest today!! Looked like the male. I heard but did not see another Osprey in the area.

March 4 2515 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Sheila B reports: Nest # 2515: Drove by nest at 12:40 PM and there was an osprey on the next platform again. Took a quick look with binoculars and could easily see a necklace indicating it was a female. Came for another look at 3:15 and the female osprey had moved from the nesting platform to a snag located a short distance away. She continued looking around the area. There were at least 30 grackles in the snag and many neighboring trees. The female did not seem to be distracted by them. Nesting platform still does not have any obvious new nesting material.
March 4 2515 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: Today is the first time I’ve seen an osprey in the nest , although the monitor officially assigned to this nest saw an adult last week. (I am at the location 3x a week for unrelated activities, but always look at the nest when there). I presume it is the mother, but I only had my cellphone with me, so couldn’t get a closeup look. It does look like a “necklace marking on the chest.). She sat pretty quietly for the full hour I was nearby and remained in the nest even when a light rain began. The nest itself took a beating in the off season. It’s too high in the light structure to see how much nesting material is down below, but there is no visible material as it typically the case for this nest. I’m hopeful some rebuilding will take place.
March 5 6211 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: Lucy & Ricky have returned for another season. When I arrived at the nest, Lucy was sitting in the nest. Ricky flew in with a fish and Lucy moved from the nest to a branch to eat. Ricky remained for a while and then flew out. He returned about 10 minutes later and flew out again. It’s unknown if they have mated yet.
March 5 8053 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Marge I: Still no activity
March 5 5395 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: still no activity. A couple of adult ospreys were observed flying about not too far from the nesting tree, but there are 3 other nests within a mile radius so it’s impossible to know if either of those were MO or PO. I will check again in a few days.

Note: Sheila B reports: 2:50 PM female flew to nesting light to perch. Another osprey circled over nest light once then flew off toward tower behind old Sam’s building. It was flying in circles over the pond area behind Sam’s. Female on nest light took off a few minutes later but didn’t see the direction she went. 2:56 two ospreys were circling over pond area. At 3:00 a third osprey joined in the circling behavior but it was a short distance away from the pair that seemed to be flying together. The views of this behavior were intermittent due to trees. 3:04 all ospreys were gone from view. Returned at 4:10 to find female perched in the snag tree near the nesting light. No visible nesting material was seen.

Note: Diane H: I visited this nest today (3/8/25, 9:20am -9:30 am), and saw one of the pair standing and preening on the edge of the nest. Looks like the nest may still be under construction, as there were at least 3 large branches jutting out below, added since my last visit. Note: Joanne V reports: This is the initial observation for this nest. It used to be an eagle's nest, but ospreys seem to have moved in. When I got to the nest, a female osprey was on a branch near the nest. She flew over to another branch in the same tree, still near the nest. I saw another osprey fly near the nesting tree, but it did not fly into the tree. It is not known if this was the male mate to the osprey in the tree. I am looking for a monitor for this nest. Until one can be found, I will check the nest.

Note: Joanne V reports: Observing via the webcam, this pair was briefly together this morning, then one flew off. They are clearly bringing in new nesting material as a week go, the nesting platform was almost bare. They still have a long way to go, however, before any egg can have a well matted incubation bed. Both osprey back in nest about 20 minutes later. Photo uploaded from webcam.

Note: Sheila B reports: 12:40 PM an osprey was standing on the nest light and there was also a large stick with Spanish moss on the light. This was not there yesterday. Bird showed only a few dark feathers in the center of the chest which would indicate a male. Osprey flew off to a pine by Goodwill shortly after I arrived. It made no vocal sounds. 4:10-4:25 PM Two osprey were observed in a pine tree by Goodwill. Male at the top of the picture and female at the bottom. Male flew off shortly after I arrived and female was still in the tree when I left at 4:25. There was no new nesting material on the nest light fixture.

Note: MAT reports: Checked Nest #2520 - observed Nora on the nest and Nick in tree watching her. Not sure Nora is actually incubating yet but will look tomorrow to see if she is still on the nest. Glad they have both returned and are exhibiting mating behavior!
March 18 7858 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Kathy A: Hooray and Hallelujah!!! Both Osprey have returned to nest 7858! When I first arrived this afternoon there was only one Osprey in the nest again but after a few minutes he flew out of the nest and straight across the lagoon toward the tree I sitting under. I thought he was going to land and hang out above there me like he often does. But he kept going - flying around in several big circles and suddenly flushed Mom out of another tree who then joined him back in the nest! It sounds a little crazy but it sure seemed like he wanted me to know that she was finally back - -we've both been waiting for so long!

Note: Joanne V reports: As I was walking toward the nesting tree from a fair distance away, I observed an osprey flying around the lagoon which is close to the nest. It never got too near to the tree. Lucy was in the nest, clearly visible and chirping away. When the other osprey flew closer, she sat more upright and chirped faster and louder. I suspect this had to be Ricky. Ricky never did approach the nest and Lucy maintained her position within the nest. Based on her behavior, I am recording the initiation of incubation. This will continue to be monitored for verification. Photo of Lucy included.

Note: Christine B: March 21,2025 Nest #4074 This Morning Mom was very low in the nest . I knew she was there when she popped her head up and began chirping. Shortly thereafter I observed Dad flying toward the area with a fish. He circled a couple times and landed in the nest and then flew off heading toward the ocean..
March 21 6981 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Christine B: This morning I observed Mom in the nest. I could see her tail feathers and the top of her head. I was getting ready to leave when she started chirping and soon after Dad came flying into the nest. He settled in next to her. So I am happy to report that both my nest couples are back.

Note: Sandra P reports: Finally a photo of the 3 eggs. It’s interesting that Oprah sits on them until Oscar comes, she leaves and he sits on them until she returns. The change over is done very quickly so the eggs are not uncovered for a long period of time. Good parents.

March 22 11231 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: Went today to observe this nest and location so it could be added to the HHI Osprey-Watch program. The female was alone in the nest and shortly thereafter, the male flew in. I only stayed about 10 minutes, but they both remained in the nest until I left. I will be looking for an assigned monitor for this nest.
March 22 11220 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: There was a male osprey sitting on a branch on the nesting tree. I observed him on this same branch last week. This nest is very far away and is very deep (as it had been an eagle nest previously). There is absolutely no way to determine if there is a female deep in the nest incubating eggs. This nest was discovered late in the nesting season, so it may not be possible to record any additional seasonal milestones unless or until chicks can be seen in the nest. Stay tuned.

Note: Jim H: I have been gone for most of the last three weeks but have had some neighbors watching on a regular schedule . They have reported 1-2 osprey standing on the nest or near the nest almost daily. I have been back for a couple of days and have observed osprey either standing on or in the nest and/or a second osprey near the nest.

I have a video of this but will have to send via a drop service as it is too large to email. I could not tell if MO was on the nest as it we still fairly dark.
March 25 11221 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Paul P reports: MO was on the nest and PO was seen bringing 2 different clutches of nest material to the nest. PO would be in nest for 45 seconds and then flew away and returned within 1 minute with another mass of nest material. It looked like pine needles and smaller material, no sticks. I witnessed PO bringing nest material twice and had to leave. MO was in the nest during this entire time.

Note: Rick L reports: The nest over the parking area was busy today. The male brought a fish to the female. They attempted to mate briefly. The actual nest structure isn't doing very well though, but it is early.
March 25 2515 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Sheila B reports: 11:45 AM female was standing on nest. A good amount of nesting had been added. Female was actively looking around the area. She began chirping then changed her body direction and started chirping more loudly. Male flew in with a fish which female took and mantled. She continued chirping and then the male joined in and the chirping became louder and more urgent. Both birds were looking in the air and then another male flew low over the nest. It flew away and did not return. Female left the nest and went to a neighboring snag and started to eat her fish while the male remained in the nest. The male flew to a nearby pine tree where he had a direct view of the female. 12:08 PM female on snag eating her fish and there were many fish crows and grackles in the area, some in the same tree with the female. Male osprey came to the snag, touched down on the female’s back to initiate mating but the female’s footing did not seem to be good as she slipped slightly to the side, so male stopped the mating attempt. About 12:25 PM female returned to the nest with the remainder of her fish and continued eating. Male returned and first mating was completed then male flew off. Withing two minutes the male returned to the nest. Twice the male flew a short, very low lap around the nesting area then returned to the nest. When I left at 12:34, only the female was standing in the nest. Returned at 3:55-4:05 PM. Female was standing on neighboring snag and male was in the nest. The male made multiple low-level laps around the parking lot which has quite a few single trees with dead branches. He would fly in and snap off branches or pick up Spanish moss off the ground and take it back to the nest. The female did not participate in the stick collection but did call out periodically from her observation post. Male was still working on nesting when I left.

Note: Marge I: Today was interesting. I saw one Osprey sitting on the edge of the nest. After a few seconds she flapped her wings a few times and went into the nest so deep I could not see her. I feel she might indeed be incubating her eggs.

Note: Joanne V reports: while it had appeared last week that Lucy was incubating, after today’s observation, that appears premature. Lucy was resting on a branch in the nesting tree and then Ricky flew into the nest. He remained there at least 15 minutes; both were in their same positions when I left. Incubation date may need to be adjusted. Photo is Lucy on branch by nest.

Note: Paul P reports: 3/27/25 7:05am. PO flew over the nest doing what you relayed as a 'mating flyover', this went on for like 30 seconds. During this time MO was in the nest. After the flyover PO landed in the nest and from my angle looked like he landed on MO! Maybe another attempt at mating? From this time on I have only seen MO in the nest so this leads me to believe that she is on the eggs. NOTE: If mating was successful on this day, it would be 3 days later for first egg. Will tentatively note incubation initiation on 3/30/25

It appears more nesting has been added since it is now rising above the platform lights. The male (Sam) is perched in one of the pine trees near Goodwill which is an easy spot for him to watch the nest. 11:44 Sammie flew to pine next to the one Sam is in. Sammie was repeatedly chirped while looking in the direction of Sam. 11:50 Sammie returned to the nest followed by Sam and mating encounter happened. Both osprey remained standing in the nest until Sam flew back to the pine at 11:56. When I left at 12:10, Sammie was still standing in the nest rearranging some of the nest materials and Sam was in the pine tree.

Note: Joanne V reports: it was a bit of a confusing observation this afternoon. I first saw whom I judged to be Ricky on a tree branch on the opposite side of the pond from the nesting tree. It was definitely a male osprey. As I approached the nest, I did not see or hear Lucy, but I I could hear Ricky loudly across the pond. I then saw another osprey flying overhead (Ricky was still on the branch) & then Lucy flew out of the nest for maybe 30 seconds and flew back in. Then I saw an eagle overhead and initially thought it might be Ricky (because now the branch was empty), but when I got a closer look, realized it was an eagle. I did see 2 different ospreys flying around, but none flew into the nest. There are 2 other osprey nests very close by. I still think there are eggs, although it concerns me that Lucy left them, albeit briefly (especially when an eagle was out & about). I’ll continue to monitor at least weekly. This observation was about 40 minutes.

At one point he stopped to mate with her and then continued his nest building activities.
April 4 7858 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N incubation
Note: Kathy A: I'm a bit more certain of incubation at 7858. Their behavior is very typical of past years - one osprey is in the nest when I check with her head or feathers barely visible above the nest and if Dad is not there at first he usually shows up and sits on the limb right by Mom. (I've also observed this behavior since Tues Apr 2 when I returned to HHI)

Note: Diane H: I'm excited to report activity by my nest today: 4/5/25 from 10:00 am to 10:20 am. First noticed that the nest seemed empty when I arrived. I was admiring its construction (including what looked like a long kite tail flapping in the breeze from it), when I spotted one adult (MO) perched nearby on another floodlight pole. She was pecking at something between her feet (feeding?), but there was no nest at this perch. I then spotted PO flying in from a distance. I was watching to see if he would fly to their nest or to MO's new perch. He flew off without stopping, but a mid-sized bird (about half the size of MO) flew in and perched beside MO. I couldn't determine what kind of bird, but then 3 more of the same size flew in and joined them on the perch! I watched MO pass something from her beak/mouth to bird #1. After less than a minute, all 4 visitors flew off to another nearby floodlight perch. MO remained on her new perch, and did not appear to be disturbed by the visitors. I was so excited, thinking that these were osprey fledglings, but now I am not so sure. I didn't notice white heads. It also seems kind of early. What do you think? Do ospreys hang out with other bird species? Or might these 4 perch visitors be fledglings?
April 5 9117 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N incubation
Note: Kathy A: There is a lot of ongoing activity at 9117 (but I'm probably seeing so much because I'm able to observe it so frequently - it's just outside my window). I see both osprey in the nest sometimes and often one laying low with head barely visible above the nest rim. But sometimes I only see Dad on the limb beside the nest. Occasionally they're both still flying back and forth and fiddling with sticks and pulling at spanish moss but the fact that one is often low in the nest, makes me think there is possibly incubation. (I've observed this behavior since Tues Apr 2 when I returned to HHI)

April 6 11231 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: upon approaching the nest, I saw an osprey fly away from the nest. About 5 minutes later, the male returned with a long strand of Spanish moss. He remained in the nest and shortly thereafter, the female returned to the nest, also with nesting material. This pair appears to be a young couple-perhaps their first nest together as mates. The nest itself is in a vulnerable spot on a lower branch, not well supported by other surrounding branches. Material can be easily blown away by a strong wind. But this couple appears persistent.
April 6 2521 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: When I arrived at the nest, papa osprey was sitting on a branch in a tree not far from the nesting structure. This structure is very high and it is not possible to view the mama when she is deep in the nest incubating. The fact that papa was nearby indicates the likelihood eggs are still being incubated. Based on the timeline, hatching could occur within the next few weeks. The photo is of papa.

Sam and Sammie would occasionally give single chirps. Sammie seemed to be in flat back position and as she was observed, her feathers started to stand up and a short time later feathers laid back down. I suspect she may have been laying an egg. She sat quietly for a while then started to gently chirp while facing Sam. Her chirps became more frequent and louder while she looked at Sam. 11:58 Sam came to nest and there was mating.

There were 2 eggs in nest. We can close the nest. I am truly surprised this happened after watching them for several years. I am heartbroken. NOTE: As of 4/5, there were three eggs. Then something happened, 4/13, there was only one egg. We did have a bad storm and I thought that may have been an issue? Starting on 4/13, both ospreys would come and go and often they were together in the nest, but standing over the egg/ eggs (2), never sitting on them. They did that for 2 days and on 4/15, Oscar flew away and than Oprah and it’s been empty since. I went back and looked at my notes from 2017, a long time so it makes it more disappointing…. As I watched them this year, I saw the change of behavior and felt something was not right. Oprah stopped sitting on the eggs.

Note: Sue F reports: Amazingly I am now seeing an osprey! I pass this nest usually 4 to 6 times a week. Of course even with that, I am only seeing it for a couple of seconds. Definitely not the best way to observe it. 4/14 2:16 pm There was one standing on the nest. Not much of a nest but definitely something 4/15 9:14 am There was a bird sitting on the nest. 4/16 12:13 pm. There was a bird sitting on the nest.

Note: Marge I: Since my last report I have checked my nest twice. Once I saw the male in the tree next to the nest. On 4/16 I didn’t see anything at first but then saw her flip out her back feathers. So she is still deep in the next but I can’t tell if we have a baby yet.

Note: Diane R reports: It's been very hard to tell exactly what has been happening in our nest due to it's shape. We definitely observed mating but after that it was just best guess on when Daisy started sitting on eggs and when they hatched. What we observed yesterday was Duke bringing food to the nest and Daisy appeared to be standing in the nest to feed her chicks. There are so many birds chirping in the area it's impossible to tell how many chicks there are. We will now start watching for little heads to pop up.

April 23 6211 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: quick observation today. I could just about see two sets of tails reaching up above the nest. Given this, I speculate that both Lucy & Ricky were together fairly deep in the nest. Good indication that eggs are still incubating. Based on estimated initiation for incubation, chicks should be hatching fairly soon.

NOTE: The pair has not been observed together in this nest, only a single osprey at various times. This is a tough nest to observe as it’s on an expressway with no good place to stop. Nest checks are drive by. It is a shallow nest, however, so a chick would be clearly visible if there is a successful hatching.

Note: Joanne V reports: I kept hearing chirps from inside the nest, but saw no birds. Then I spotted an osprey flying about and what appears to be a fledgling, pop up inside the next and began branching. Unfortunately the camera used at the time did not have enough zoom distance for a crisp photo, but the eyes looked orange instead of yellow. The flying Osprey never went into the nest and eventually was out of sight. The “fledgling “ stopped branching and sat for a while. Then submerged deep into the nest out of sight. No other Osprey was visible in the nest. Based on the size and the branching behavior, a hatching date of 4/15 was estimated.

It had initially been thought this nest was abandoned, but think that might have been premature. While no osprey were visible in the nest, it is very deep and very high and tough to get close. There may be incubation occurring. I could not find a way to delete the nest failure on this page. Jean F, the assigned monitor, will continue to check the nest for any progress and will update accordingly.
May 1 5395 HHI Osprey Watch 0 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: all very quiet during this visit. No visual sightings in or around nest and no chirping sounds. It is suspected that MO is continuing to incubate down low in the nest. I will check again in a few days.

May 7 7858 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Kathy A: Great news - we have a baby at nest 7858!!! I observed different behaviors by Mom on 5/2/25 whereby Mom was standing in the nest (not lying down) and moving a lot from side to side (from what appeared to be from one foot to the other) and looking down a lot - and I thought then that maybe she was turning eggs or possibly there was a baby in the nest but I could not confirm either. On 5/5/25 she was standing in the nest and appeared to be eating something - but not the typical feeding of youngsters behavior. On 5/7/25 she was standing in the nest and calling a lot but I didn't see Dad while I was there. Today when I arrived and before I had lifted my camera - Dad arrived carrying a fish and there was a lot of commotion with Mom flapping her wings but he didn't stay and I think he carried the fish off with him. Mom was chewing at and tugging on some sticks in the nest and then she briefly left the nest to retrieve a big stick and place it carefully in the nest. I watched for a long time hoping Dad would return with the meal and eventually glimpsed a slight movement on the left side of the nest opposite where Mom -was standing - thinking it might be just a stick moving as Mom moved about the nest. But after several minutes a little head briefly popped into view!!!! I didn't get a great photo but it does confirm that 7858 has a baby - and right on time - as this nest usually has little ones by Mother's Day. (See photo below) I am sooooooo excited!

Note: Kathy A: All appears well at nest 9117 with Mom still lying low in the nest, usually only her head or a couple of feathers visible. I occasionally see Dad hanging out on the limb by the nest, but not often, or bringing a fish for Mom and leaving it in the nest. Although a couple of days ago he brought a fish to the limb and Mom didn't seem very interested, but when she got up he took off from the limb with the fish! I haven't observed a change in behavior there that would indicate little ones yet, but fingers crossed!

Note: Joanne V reports: PO was sitting on a branch near the nest and flew away shortly after I arrived. While MO was not visible and no chirping was heard, it is suspected that she was deep in the nest still incubating. If the date estimate for incubation initiation is accurate, hatching should occur quite soon.

Note: Linda O: I am following up with you on Osprey Nest 7019. I went out on Friday, 5/9 at about 3:30 PM The nest is more easily observed from the Cupp Course in Palmetto Hall between holes 5 & 6. These pics attached are from the golf course. It appears to be a deep nest, so it is hard to see what is happening. In the one picture it looks to me that there is the tiniest bit of an Osprey head just above the nest branches. Difficult to spot. At times when I can not be on the golf course I will observe from the street side that you showed me. I will be going back at different times of day to try to observe more action or possibly a mate bringing in some food.

Note: Carol M reports: have been seeing an Osprey in the nest but don’t have a great view since it is up so high . Today however, I have 2 very noisy Osprey in a tree in my backyard. I would assume the mother would not leave the nest?? I can’t see a bird in the nest today. I have seen a few other Osprey flying around the water behind my house the past few weeks. That is new this year. I have only seen 2 in the past. That is why I am a little confused on what is happening. I have not seen baby. They typically practice flying in my trees in the past. NOTE: this monitor was out of town for a month, so it’s challenging to know what might be occurring at this point. For now, it will be a “wait & see” situation-hopefully obtaining more definitive observational data.

Note: Joanne V reports: when I arrived at the nesting tree, Ricky was flying out of the nest. I did not see him for the rest of the 30 minute observation. At first, I only heard soft chirps coming from the nest and then Lucy popped up. I wasn’t sure until I looked at the photo if it was an adult (Lucy) or a hatchling. It was not the hatchling. But based on behavioral observations these past few days, I do believe there is at least one hatchling. Estimated date of hatching based on incubation initiation is May 1st.
May 15 5395 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: when I arrived at the nesting tree, MO was on a branch in an adjacent tree eating a fish. I heard chirping coming from the nest and thought it might be the hatchling. Instead, it was PO who then briefly sat visibly in the nest, and then 10 minutes later, flew out of the nest (he did not return during the visit). MO, however, remained on the branch. As it is unlikely eggs would be left unattended (although possible), I suspect there is at least one hatchling. It is a very deep nest and quite high in the tree. It could be another week before a head is visible . May 10th will be used as a hatching estimated date (it can be changed later if warrant).

Note: Linda S reports: Still no activity at 9643. I am seeing 2 & 3 Osprey over our complex at 45 Folly Field Rd not daily but often. Not sure if they are coming from the old Sam’s parking lot nest or if there could be another nest nearby. I continue to watch for activity, but can’t figure out where these 3 are nesting. I have seen the nest at Sam’s & activity there but that’s about it. Still makes me sad that the original nest on FF was destroyed to make way for the 166 timeshares. They were perfectly happy there!
