Description
This nest is located in a live pine overhanging the lagoon near number 8 green at Harbourtown (5 Heritage Rd) in Sea Pines. The nest was first reported to us in June 2026, so there is limited data for this season..

| Note: | Paul L reports: I observed the nest on and off for over two hours today between 1-3pm and observed a female in the nest occasionally poking her head out in view and spreading her wings. The male partner was observed in foraging flight nearby and returned to the nest 30 minutes later carrying a fish in his talon which he dropped off at the nest. I was not able to observe any nestlings with my binoculars but I took a live Photo of the nest (attached) that when viewed in expanded live mode appears to show 2-3 small heads bobbing in the nest. I believe those to be nestlings. NOTE: When zooming on the nest, it appears there are 2 or 3 little visible heads which would indicate they are probably round 3- 4 weeks old. While there may be 3, only 2 have been recorded until we can confirm. Based on seeing the heads of the young and that they do not appear to be fuzzy/light colored, we will guess that hatching took place around May 15th. Again, this is a new nest and this is the best guess based on the limited data. | ||||||

| Note: | Paul L reports: I observed the nest with binoculars between 4-5pm. Yesterday I observed the female guarding the nest and two young nestlings poked their heads up briefly and appeared to be competing with each other for a stick that eventually was flung out of the nest! The nestling appeared to be larger than my previous report. The male was not observed. | ||||||

| Note: | Paul L reports: Today I observed the female once again perched in the nest. I didn’t observe the young nestlings but I did hear chirping noises from the nest. The male was observed perched above the lagoon on the upper branch of an adjacent pine tree. NOTE: Since we have confirmed two young previously, the chirping was probably the young down in the nest. | ||||||

| Note: | Paul L reports: I returned from my overseas trip this past Friday and have observed the Heritage nest on 7/4,7/6,& 7/8. Each day I observed the female in the nest but no signs of any nestlings. On 7/8 I observed both the male and female in the nest together. Not sure if the clutch fledged while I was gone for 9 days. I will observe again tomorrow but the nest is so high up it’s hard to know if any nestlings are still in the nest unless they pop up. Note: If our estimate of hatching around May 15th is accurate, it is possible that the pair might have fledged while the monitor was away. However, even if they fledged, they will be returning to and hanging around the nest for about 4 weeks after fledging. Based on this, I have recorded the two seen in the nest as the juveniles, which is very likely. They will be almost the same size as adults and at this stage, standing/sitting up in the nest. Due to the location of the nest, it is difficult to clearly observe the feather pattern to confirm this. | ||||||

| Note: | Paul reports: Male and female adult confirmed at/in the nest. See image showing the male. NO: No sign of the juveniles today, but it is possible they have fledged and were just not around the nest. based on previous observations, if hatching occurred about 5/15, they should have fledged around the 3rd/4th week of June. They should be seen around the nest until at least August 1st. The monitor will keep watching for them. | ||||||
