Activity log
Date | Watcher | Adults | Eggs | Young | Observations | Photo | Edit |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
January 16 | HHI Osprey Watch | 0 | N | N | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports no activity. | ||||||
January 20 | HHI Osprey Watch | 0 | N | N | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports there is still no activity. NOTE: This pair returned in January last season, so there is some expectation that it will again be an early nesting pair. | ||||||
January 25 | HHI Osprey Watch | 0 | N | N | |||
Note: | No activity. | ||||||
January 30 | HHI Osprey Watch | 0 | N | N | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports: Still waiting for occupants to return. | ||||||
February 2 | HHI Osprey Watch | 1 | N | N | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports: 12:00 noon, Feb 2….. one mate has arrived!! Sitting on tower arm beneath the nest, calling and calling. Can’t tell if it’s Mrs or Mr. NOTE: Joanne V checked the nest at 3:30 PM same day and took attached photo. Looks like this is the female osprey. | ||||||
February 11 | HHI Osprey Watch | 1 | N | N | |||
Note: | Osprey was observed bringing nesting material to the nest. | ||||||
February 20 | HHI Osprey Watch | 2 | N | N | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports: One bird hanging out in the nest. Can’t tell if it’s Mrs or Mr. Moving around quite a bit, so probably not sitting on eggs. Second bird just joined the nest. | ||||||
March 1 | HHI Osprey Watch | 2 | N | N | |||
Note: | Joanne V reports: While not the assigned monitor, I was by this nest with my camera this morning so took some pictures. When I arrived, both ospreys were in the nest. About 10 minutes later, dad (I presume) flew out of the nest and mom remained. It is not clear yet if they have mated and/or if eggs are incubating. | ||||||
March 4 | HHI Osprey Watch | 1 | U | N | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports: Waited 10 minutes and just as I was thinking no activity, one adult head popped up for a few seconds. Barely visible. NOTE: It is highly probably that eggs are now being incubated. The dates line up and and it is very typical for a mother osprey to stay low in the nest during incubation. March 4 will be recorded as initiation and this nest will continue to be closely monitored. (Joanne V) | ||||||
March 10 | HHI Osprey Watch | 0 | U | N | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports: 1:40-1:50, cannot see any movement in my nest. NOTE: It is still judged that eggs are incubating, but it is often challenging to see the mother if she is laying low in the nest. | ||||||
March 26 | HHI Osprey Watch | 2 | U | N | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports: After watching the nest for 20 minutes with no activity, suddenly both adults flew out, circled around and then 1 returned to the nest. However, cannot see the adult from this angle | ||||||
April 6 | HHI Osprey Watch | 1 | U | N | |||
Note: | Joanne V reports: When I arrived at the nest, papa osprey was sitting on a branch in a tree not far from the nesting structure. This structure is very high and it is not possible to view the mama when she is deep in the nest incubating. The fact that papa was nearby indicates the likelihood eggs are still being incubated. Based on the timeline, hatching could occur within the next few weeks. The photo is of papa. | ||||||
April 24 | HHI Osprey Watch | 1 | U | N | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports: After no activity for 10 minutes, 1 adult returned to the nest. However, cannot see any activity within the nest now. Can’t even see the adult. NOTE: Assuming eggs are still incubating, offspring should be visible soon. | ||||||
May 1 | HHI Osprey Watch | 1 | U | 1 | young standing | ||
Note: | Joanne V reports: I kept hearing chirps from inside the nest, but saw no birds. Then I spotted an osprey flying about and what appears to be a fledgling, pop up inside the next and began branching. Unfortunately the camera used at the time did not have enough zoom distance for a crisp photo, but the eyes looked orange instead of yellow. The flying Osprey never went into the nest and eventually was out of sight. The “fledgling “ stopped branching and sat for a while. Then submerged deep into the nest out of sight. No other Osprey was visible in the nest. Based on the size and the branching behavior, a hatching date of 4/15 was estimated. | ||||||
May 11 | HHI Osprey Watch | 0 | U | 1 | young standing | ||
Note: | Lisa P reports: not entirely sure, but believe one juvenile osprey on the edge of the nest today. Just waiting for lunch to be delivered. | ||||||
June 9 | HHI Osprey Watch | 1 | U | 1 | |||
Note: | Joanne V reports: swung by this nest today. There was an osprey sitting upright in the nest. At first, I thought it was the fledgling, but on closer examination of the photo taken, it is an adult because the eyes are yellow and not orange. No other activity was observed in or around the nest. It is not clear if the fledgling was in another tree near the nest or where it might be. Based on the timetable , it is early for that fledgling to be independent. This will require more frequent monitoring. | ||||||
June 12 | HHI Osprey Watch | 1 | U | 1 | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports: 1 bird landed in the nest. Cannot tell if it’s a full adult but if not, it’s pretty close. NOTE: It is not clear if the fledgling is still hanging around the nest. Without a clear view of the eyes (yellow or orange) it cannot be determined if an osprey in this nest is adult or juvenile. The photo taken earlier in the week was clearly an adult in the nest. | ||||||
June 23 | HHI Osprey Watch | 1 | U | Y | |||
Note: | Lisa P reports : 1 bird in the nest. Looks like an adult. |
