Description

St Johns Place, Shipyard approx 1500' from the old nest that was blow down. It is on private property so close observation will be hard 2/28/2020 When I first spotted the pair 2 weeks ago I assumed they would begin a rebuild of their badly damaged nest - this has not occurred - I see at least one of the pair still in the neighborhood but I cannot find their new nest if there is one - pretty sad about this - I'm not sure where they are - last time their nest was destroyed they rebuilt across the street - I'll keep searching FOUND THEM!! 3/19 the pair has built a new nest - in St Johns Place approx 1500' from the old nest that was blow down last fall

Date Watcher Adults Eggs Young Observations Photo Edit
January 15 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: This nest is in tact, but could use some sprucing up. No sign yet of either of the pair returning to the nest. Last year it wasn’t until March, but some years it was February.
February 3 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports there is still no activity as yet
February 14 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: no activity yet, although many osprey are flying about (4 nests in the area, so unclear which nests these osprey use). It was observed that one of the branches on which PO typically likes to sit has been broken off. But I’m sure he’ll find another.
February 23 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: MAT reports: No activity
March 5 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: still no activity. A couple of adult ospreys were observed flying about not too far from the nesting tree, but there are 3 other nests within a mile radius so it’s impossible to know if either of those were MO or PO. I will check again in a few days.
March 8 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: As I was approaching the nest, I saw 2 ospreys flying about near the tree. One (MO) flew in and began chirping away. After about 10 minutes, while standing near the nest, I could hear another osprey chirping in the distance. Then I spotted PO who was flying into the nest with a fish in his talons. I waited about another 10 minutes and both remained in the nest.
March 12 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: MO was deep down in the nest, but loudly chirping away. Given this is typical for her in years past when she is sitting on eggs, and given my observation that both have been together in the nest, I’m using today’s date to record incubation initiation.
March 15 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N
Note: Joanne V reports; As I walked up to the nest, PO flew into the nest with what looked like a fish. Unfortunately, I didn’t have my camera out yet. It was assumed that MO was deep down in the nest with eggs. I waited only about 15 minutes and was only able to get a photo of PO’s back end in the nest.
March 19 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: As I walked toward the nesting tree, I saw whom I believed was PO flying about. Within seconds after reaching the nest, PO flew into the nest. As I looked down to check the camera image, he was no longer visible in the nest. I walked around the other side to get a different view, and I saw MO and snapped a photo (included). I still believe incubation is in process, but will continue to assess that and update activity.
April 7 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: I could hear MO chirping away even before I reached the nesting tree. She was very vocal for at least 10 minutes. I could just barely see the top of her head in the nest. Clearly she is still incubating. No sign of PO today, but a friend told me she saw him bringing a fish to the nest a few days ago.
April 12 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: just a quick check. MO was only partially visible in the nest. I could see the top of her tail feathers. She is still incubating. No sign of PO.
April 23 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: just a quick observation today. All very quiet, but did see one tail extended above the nest top. I suspect MO is still incubating. It should not be too much longer before a hatching occurs.
May 1 HHI Osprey Watch 0 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: all very quiet during this visit. No visual sightings in or around nest and no chirping sounds. It is suspected that MO is continuing to incubate down low in the nest. I will check again in a few days.
May 9 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: PO was sitting on a branch near the nest and flew away shortly after I arrived. While MO was not visible and no chirping was heard, it is suspected that she was deep in the nest still incubating. If the date estimate for incubation initiation is accurate, hatching should occur quite soon.
May 15 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: when I arrived at the nesting tree, MO was on a branch in an adjacent tree eating a fish. I heard chirping coming from the nest and thought it might be the hatchling. Instead, it was PO who then briefly sat visibly in the nest, and then 10 minutes later, flew out of the nest (he did not return during the visit). MO, however, remained on the branch. As it is unlikely eggs would be left unattended (although possible), I suspect there is at least one hatchling. It is a very deep nest and quite high in the tree. It could be another week before a head is visible . May 10th will be used as a hatching estimated date (it can be changed later if warrant).
May 21 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: nothing was visible in the nest, although I did hear soft chirping.. This time PO was on the branch of the adjacent tree. No little heads popping up just yet, but behavior suggests that hatching has occurred.
May 25 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U U
Note: Joanne V reports: upon arrival, PO was seen perched on a branch in the nesting tree. Chirps were audible from the nest, but initially no osprey were seen in the nest. MO then repositioned several times and then lay visibly in the nest. The hatchling was not seen above the nest; hopefully soon.
June 6 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U U
Note: Joanne V reports: PO flew onto a limb in the nesting tree as I was walking toward the tree. Initially, MO was not visible. After about 10 minutes, she popped up briefly. No sign of the nestling, but it is fairly certain one is in the nest. PO flew away .
June 9 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: only MO was visible in the nest today. She was occasionally poking her head up and down as if she might be feeding a chick. No chirps were heard and PO was not around. Soon the chick should be grown enough to see.
June 18 HHI Osprey Watch 0 U 2
Note: Joanne V reports: while the view into the nest is very obstructed by branches and pine needles, clearly 2 chicks were seen today. It’s been tough in previous visits to see any chicks, although it was judged by adult behavior that at least one egg had hatched. This is the first time 2 are being reported. Although the photo is not crisp, both do appear to have the orange eyes characteristic of young ospreys.
