Date Watcher Adults Eggs Young Observations Photo Edit
February 8 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Kathy A: I check nest 9117 everyday since it’s outside my window and haven’t seen any activity at all yet but that pair usually comes kind late - sometime in March.
February 23 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Kathy A: No activity yet
March 2 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Kathy A: Last week I saw one osprey on the limb by Nest 9117 however I have not seen anymore activity or osprey there
March 4 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Kathy A: Early this morning I saw one Osprey standing in Nest 9117 - he flew back and forth several times and brought a couple of sticks and arranged them in the nest - but I haven't seen the mate or him anymore since this morning.

Note: Kathy A: Today Mom returned to nest 9117! Hooray! I hope she was impressed with the renovations Dad has been doing lately to the nest (but he had slacked off this last week, lol!) So happy they are back together again. I saw her eating in the nest so I think he brought her a fish lunch too! Quiet later this afternoon.
March 18 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Kathy A: Lots of activity continues at Nest 9117 - especially in the mornings - multiple trips back and forth sometimes bringing sticks and Spanish Moss and occasionally a fish. All appears well there.
April 5 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N incubation
Note: Kathy A: There is a lot of ongoing activity at 9117 (but I'm probably seeing so much because I'm able to observe it so frequently - it's just outside my window). I see both osprey in the nest sometimes and often one laying low with head barely visible above the nest rim. But sometimes I only see Dad on the limb beside the nest. Occasionally they're both still flying back and forth and fiddling with sticks and pulling at spanish moss but the fact that one is often low in the nest, makes me think there is possibly incubation. (I've observed this behavior since Tues Apr 2 when I returned to HHI)
April 24 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N incubation
Note: Kathy A: At 9117 I mostly see a head or tail feather barely above the nest and sometimes see the mate bring a fish to the nest or trade places with osprey in the nest. Sometimes one mate is there just hanging out on the limb by the nest.
May 9 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N incubation
Note: Kathy A: All appears well at nest 9117 with Mom still lying low in the nest, usually only her head or a couple of feathers visible. I occasionally see Dad hanging out on the limb by the nest, but not often, or bringing a fish for Mom and leaving it in the nest. Although a couple of days ago he brought a fish to the limb and Mom didn't seem very interested, but when she got up he took off from the limb with the fish! I haven't observed a change in behavior there that would indicate little ones yet, but fingers crossed!

Note: Kathy A: 9917 Update - It appears that incubation was unsuccessful at this nest - there has been lots of inconsistent behavior at the nest and lots of ongoing activity - lots of coming and going -often both osprey at or in the nest - fiddling with sticks - laying low indicating incubation only for them both to then be on the limb or eating a fish. One thing they are very successful at is catching fish. Yesterday they were eating fish at 7:30 AM, again at 12:30 and then again around 7:30pm. This morning they Both each had a fish - Mom eating hers in the nest and Dad in the nest as well but then Dad took his fish to the limb. A couple of times I was hopeful for a hatchling because Mom would be standing and looking down in the nest or laying low but so far I have not observed any babies there. I even set up a telescope in my bathroom window for the best viewing and unfortunately have not seen any babies. Both or one osprey is still at the nest all the time, with Dad spending lots of time on the limb by the nest - so they haven't given up yet - and neither will I. See attached photo.

Note: Kathy A: Nest 9117 - And again - just as I was despairing that this nest might be unsuccessful this year, I checked again around 5:30 pm (through the telecope view finder lol) and saw Mom feeding a little one!!! Its tiny head was barely visible popping up above the nest and only for a couple times. I'm also hopeful there may be two babies - I "think" I saw another head once but it may have been the same baby - however it did appear that Mom turned with food to the side a couple of times possibly indicating she was feeding another. I'll continue to keep a close watch.

Note: Kathy A: Nest 9117 - on Thursday May 29 I definitely saw Mom feeding TWO babies! I wasn't certain if there were one or two before, but definitely two! My photo was terrible so I didn't include it, but it did confirm that we have two little ones in the nest! I delayed sending this hoping to get a photo but I have not gotten a glimpse of either baby since Thursday. However Mom and/or Dad (or both together) are always at or in the nest and I do see Mom exhibiting feeding behavior regularly. I'll keep trying for a pic.
June 13 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: Kathy A: Nest 9117 - this must be a really deep nest! I see Mom and Dad at or in the nest nearly all the time but have only managed a quick glimpse of one baby (two separate times) Today I saw Mom eating and exhibiting feeding behavior but her back was turned to me and I barely got a glimpse of a little head between her legs as she turned to feed it some bits. Alas - no photos of the babies - and I have not seen two babies together since last report. But look at Mom, isn't she a beauty?!
June 29 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: Kathy A: I only had a glimpse of the two chicks together in this nest a couple of different times (and one very bad photo of them together). I was really hoping they would both thrive and it saddens me to report that I have not seen any indication of a second chick in several weeks now. The one chick I do see everyday now is growing rapidly and Mom and Dad are very attentive, bringing fish and feeding baby and shielding him from the hot sun with their wings. I believe this nest is quite deep and wide since sometimes I cannot see what is going on inside even now that the chick is good size - so there may be some possibility that the second chick is just always out of my sight - but by this age and with all the feedings and activity going on that I would see the two together at some point - and I have not. I"m still hoping though ❤️
