Description

Location is next to the 17th green on the Jones Golf Course in Palmetto Dunes. There are 2 vine covered pine trees just east of the green. The nest is in the right tree if you are standing on the green facing east. It is not real visible but I saw an Osprey fly into the tree/nest.

Date Watcher Adults Eggs Young Observations Photo Edit
February 15 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Steve J reports 2/15: nest looks a bit unkempt and no Osprey activity
March 1 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Steve J reports: A single osprey was standing on the nest.
March 22 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Steve J reports: I visited the nest today. Once again a single Osprey in the nest. Seemed to have a white breast/neck and or head. The Osprey brought in some twigs for maintenance.
April 9 HHI Osprey Watch 1 Y N incubation
Note: Steve J reports for April 1-9: I have visited both the nest several times in the last 10 days or so. Every time I barely see an Osprey on the next. She was obviously very low in the nests. I could just see a bit of movement. No evidence of another Osprey in the area at all. NOTE: Based on these reports, we are assuming incubation might have started around March 31.
April 16 HHI Osprey Watch 1 Y N incubation
Note: Jim has added a new photo of the nest with one osprey in the nest.
April 28 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: The nest is in a pine tree that the property owner wants to remove because of damage to his driveway, To do this a town permit can only be issued when the nest is inactive. For this reason, Joanne V met with the property owner to assess the nest and to see if there was a suitable nearby pine in which to place a platform. It was determined that there is no good spot in the vicinity for a platform. The community will require the home owner to replace the pine with an oak, not another pine. It is unclear if incubation is underway. Initial reports indicate possible incubation about 3/31 but it has not been confirmed. There are osprey around the nest but there has been no further observation of Mom in the nest incubating. We will continue to monitor the nest, and if there are no clear signs that the nest indeed has incubation/chicks the owner will apply for a permit after Memorial Day. Even once the permit is issued, it will take some time before it is removed. If there is conclusive incubation prior to Memorial Day, the home owner will have to wait until the end of the nesting season.
May 6 HHI Osprey Watch 1 Y N incubation
Note: Steve J reported: Nest #8739….see picture. Today while watching twice an Osprey flew in carrying twigs. At one point I could see the nesting Osprey also. Obviously sitting low in the nest.
May 17 HHI Osprey Watch 0 Y N incubation
Note: Steve J reports: If I hang around for 10 minutes or so I see a parent move in the nest. NOTE: This seems to indicate incubation continues
May 25 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U 1
Note: Steve J reports: The last 2 times I visited #8739 an Osprey was standing on the side of the nest. Went by yesterday and approx 3 days prior. NOTE: Based on the observation and the photo showing an adult upright, it is likely the eggs have hatched. We hope to confirm this with feeding behavior observations soon. Since incubation was estimated 3/31 and following the reports, we are estimating that hatching took place between the last two updates and we will list May 21 as the date.
May 30 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N 1
Note: Steve J reports: The last few times I have been by the nest I have see an Osprey high in the nest. Today I again saw an Osprey standing high on the edge of the nest pretty much with her butt in the air looking/reaching down into the nest. The mate was on an upper left branch. I am guessing this verifies baby (s) in the nest? NOTE: Yes, this confirms hatching.
