Date Watcher Adults Eggs Young Observations Photo Edit
January 13 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: The nest is still in tact, but can use some sprucing up. No sign of this pair near the nest as yet. This pair did not begin nesting last year until early March.
January 28 HHI Osprey Watch 0 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: Although no ospreys were observed in the nest or on any branch of the nesting tree, a female osprey was seen flying around the nearby pond. Obviously, there’s no way to determine if that was Lucy or one of the ospreys from nearby nests (there are 4 in close proximity to each other). It is still early for this pair to mate.

Note: Joanne V reports: visited this nest today and initially thought (from a distance) that one of the pair might be on a branch in the nesting tree. As I came closer, I realized it was an eagle. The eagle hung out for about 30 minutes and then flew away. I checked back 5 hours later and watched as the eagle flew back onto one of the branches. He only stayed for about 15 minutes. Still no sign of either osprey pair, but it's early yet for this nest. The photo is of the eagle.

Note: Joanne V reports: Lucy & Ricky have returned for another season. When I arrived at the nest, Lucy was sitting in the nest. Ricky flew in with a fish and Lucy moved from the nest to a branch to eat. Ricky remained for a while and then flew out. He returned about 10 minutes later and flew out again. It’s unknown if they have mated yet.
March 8 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: When I arrived this morning, Lucy was in the nest chirping away. No sign of Ricky. After about 15 minutes, she flew onto a branch in the nesting tree and remained there for at least 10 minutes and then I left.
March 15 HHI Osprey Watch 1 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: When I arrived, Lucy was sitting on a branch near the nest. She remained there for the next 15 minutes until I left. No sign of Ricky today. I do not believe there are any eggs yet.
March 19 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: As I was walking toward the nesting tree from a fair distance away, I observed an osprey flying around the lagoon which is close to the nest. It never got too near to the tree. Lucy was in the nest, clearly visible and chirping away. When the other osprey flew closer, she sat more upright and chirped faster and louder. I suspect this had to be Ricky. Ricky never did approach the nest and Lucy maintained her position within the nest. Based on her behavior, I am recording the initiation of incubation. This will continue to be monitored for verification. Photo of Lucy included.
March 25 HHI Osprey Watch 2 N N
Note: Joanne V reports: while it had appeared last week that Lucy was incubating, after today’s observation, that appears premature. Lucy was resting on a branch in the nesting tree and then Ricky flew into the nest. He remained there at least 15 minutes; both were in their same positions when I left. Incubation date may need to be adjusted. Photo is Lucy on branch by nest.

March 31 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: it was a bit of a confusing observation this afternoon. I first saw whom I judged to be Ricky on a tree branch on the opposite side of the pond from the nesting tree. It was definitely a male osprey. As I approached the nest, I did not see or hear Lucy, but I I could hear Ricky loudly across the pond. I then saw another osprey flying overhead (Ricky was still on the branch) & then Lucy flew out of the nest for maybe 30 seconds and flew back in. Then I saw an eagle overhead and initially thought it might be Ricky (because now the branch was empty), but when I got a closer look, realized it was an eagle. I did see 2 different ospreys flying around, but none flew into the nest. There are 2 other osprey nests very close by. I still think there are eggs, although it concerns me that Lucy left them, albeit briefly (especially when an eagle was out & about). I’ll continue to monitor at least weekly. This observation was about 40 minutes.
April 2 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: observed Lucy in the nest while walking toward the tree. By the time I got closer, she had submerged herself into the nest. I was lucky enough to get a photo before she did that. No sign of Ricky.
April 23 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: quick observation today. I could just about see two sets of tails reaching up above the nest. Given this, I speculate that both Lucy & Ricky were together fairly deep in the nest. Good indication that eggs are still incubating. Based on estimated initiation for incubation, chicks should be hatching fairly soon.
May 1 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: although marking this nest with no chicks for now, today I could see the top of a head in the nest. The osprey was never up erect enough to determine if it was Lucy or perhaps a hatchling. I will check again in a few days.
May 9 HHI Osprey Watch 0 U N
Note: Joanne V reports: very quiet again this afternoon. No activity to report. Hatching should be soon.
May 15 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U 1
Note: Joanne V reports: when I arrived at the nesting tree, Ricky was flying out of the nest. I did not see him for the rest of the 30 minute observation. At first, I only heard soft chirps coming from the nest and then Lucy popped up. I wasn’t sure until I looked at the photo if it was an adult (Lucy) or a hatchling. It was not the hatchling. But based on behavioral observations these past few days, I do believe there is at least one hatchling. Estimated date of hatching based on incubation initiation is May 1st.
May 21 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U 1 young standing
Note: Joanne V reports: heard soft chirping as I walked toward the nest. At first, nothing was visible in the nest, but several minutes later, Lucy appeared and sat upright. She spread her wings as if she planned to leave the nest, but she did not leave. I took several photos and it wasn’t until I transferred them that I noticed what looks like a hatchling standing in the nest (see photo with red circle).
May 25 HHI Osprey Watch 2 U U
Note: Joanne V reports: Ricky was flying into the nesting tree upon arrival. He remained on a branch by the nest for the entire observation. Lucy was in the nest with her nestling. She looked like she might be feeding, but it was tough to determine that for sure. Her “backside” was usually up in the air, with her head low into the nest. After about 15 minutes, she popped up, but the nestling was not visible.
June 6 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U 1 young standing
Note: Joanne V reports: upon arrival, Lucy was sitting upright in the nest. This is the first good look of her nestling. He is now growing quickly. The two remained next to other for the entire observation. No sign of Ricky.
June 9 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U 1 young standing
Note: Joanne V reports: a brief visit this afternoon. Lucy and her chick were both visible in the nest. An osprey was observed flying overhead. It is not known if that was Ricky or another osprey from one of the 4 nearby nests.
June 18 HHI Osprey Watch 0 U 2
Note: Joanne V reports: This is the first time I was able to clearly see 2 chicks. Both have grown fairly well. Look to be about 60-70% of adult size. Both have the orangish eye color. One was branching when I first arrived.
June 24 HHI Osprey Watch 1 U 2 feeding
Note: Joanne V reports: Lucy was in the nest feeding one chick while the other stood next to the sibling. At one point , the chick not engage in eating was branching, flapping wings. Should not be much longer before the chicks become fledgling.
July 2 HHI Osprey Watch 0 U 2
Note: Joanne V reports: when I arrived, I heard lots of chirping coming from both the nest and from another tree. I could not locate the osprey from the other tree, but one of the chicks was in the nest. He appears to be a male. He was flapping his wings intermittently and looked like he was trying to take flight. After about 15 minutes watching, he did indeed fly to a nearby branch, then fly to a different branch where he sat for awhile. He seemed to be having a chirping “conversation” with the other nearby chick, whom I suspect is the older sibling. As I checked the nest a week ago and both chicks remained active within the nest, I believe the older sibling fledged during this past week. The photo is of the younger sibling perched on the branch after taking a short flight
