Note: Site check for CIB osprey survey, snag nest still intact. 3 snag nests remain visible from the trail bridge: this "water treatment" snag, plus #2 and #3 snags. Snag #1 no longer standing, may have been mistaken through the trees for Bay Vista Woods/Canal Snag that is located across the canal and visible from the end of the trail.

April 2 7126 baygirl 0 N N
Note: Canada goose nesting , fyi: CANG are not native but have become nuisance residents, this is not a good sign, once CANG take an osprey nest they will often return to take the platform in years to come, they will learn to take other osprey platforms . They incubate up to 32 days causing possibly late nesting of our resident ospreys. Ospreys that nest late in the season create negative impacts on any young they produce. Cang should be deterred from nesting on osprey nest structures , interesting that the nest cam feed has been restored to the general public

With permission from DNREC and State Parks, our team assessed the nest and saw no eggs, so we proceeded to use a come-along and straightened the platform. We reinforced the corner boards, T perch and predator guard and added a ground board collar to hopefully stabilize the pole for future storms. We also dropped a 2x4 marsh perch nearby for the male. The birds returned before we left the island. There was some nest cup material so I will expect to see incubation soon

Note: Both in tree, then male flew out over Rt 1 heading towards the ocean. I have been waiting for a few years for an osprey pair to discover this very solid eagles nest. The eagles moved back to the Natl Guard woods after most of the woods in this park lot were cut and grass planted. It is possibly the ospreys are from the Bethany Police station cell tower as that nest was removed over the winter.

Note: Female osprey on Lobster Shamty platform , some nest material, she is focused on activity inside the restaurant windows very close to nesting platform , CANG still nesting in Captain Mac’s nest. For anyone who pays attention here, please keep an eye if there are any future chicks fledged as we have had to rescue young who landed on the upper decks of plexi glass condo decks next door. Young can not fly out of such a trap. Lobster Shanty platform is a high risk site

April 15 7796 baygirl 0 N N
Note: Platform appears empty of nest material, likely that the resident BAEA will not allow nesting here or at NG 3
April 16 6227 baygirl 2 U N incubation
Note: Male does not use their original nest box very much, rarely now he uses it to guard, this is unfortunate for the Bethany Marina community who placed the original platform years ago. This should not have been allowed by Army Corp/DNREC. Indiscriminate placement of poorly designed nest platform with out the required permit does not benefit the species. Female is very high on the nest with no nest rails. Hopefully her eggs and chicks will survive on this nest box.
April 18 7539 baygirl 2 U N incubation
Note: Deep in nest
April 18 4463 baygirl 2 N N
Note: Male off nest most of today, not surprising as the coast was fogged in, conditions make fishing difficult, some soft nest material brought to nest for nest bowl
April 19 6085 baygirl 2 N N
Note: Male on tree branch, female calling from nest, she was not low and flat the entire time I was in the park observing, over 1 hr, so my earlier notes about incubation may have been incorrect , will continue to check

I was unable to confirm Rt leg band on male, female flew back to nest, male remained in the tree. It appears the nest has either failed or my initial view of ospr deep in nest was weather related and not incubation. Time will tell.

May 20 4463 baygirl 2 U N incubation
Note: Observed male bring large headless fish this morning via nest cam, not viewed at site. The park office is very busy and this may keep the ospr farther off nest, also with heat over 90 they are perching in the pines for shade
May 21 4463 baygirl 2 3 N incubation
Note: I’ve been observing the cam since day break and unless I missed it I have not seen the male deliver a fish. He likes to incubate and the female may have fished for herself this morning though her crop is not full. This male is not consistently providing at this point. Once eggs hatch he must increase the amount and regularity of fish deliveries. At 3 nests with nestlings and senior pairs directly in view of my home, I have observed fish deliveries this morning starting at 6:30. The males fishing prowess is going to be key to the success of this nest, once again. He has been bringing in large fish when he delivers, but soon it must be many times per day.

May 27 7061 baygirl 0 N N
Note: No ospreys this season, someone has cut down the high marsh vegetation along Raccoon Road, exposing the marsh and possibly the ospreys would have a greater sense of disturbance, more exposure to the road. Heartbreaking as the platform has a memorial plaque and prior to increased human disturbance the birds were thriving at that site , no enforcement means no ospreys?

Note: Have not seen fish delivery on nest cam rewind tho I might have missed it since I do not have time to rewind second by second, I did see switch out on eggs and female leave and return with large branch. Nest rim looks good for next weeks hatch, fingers crossed for a productive season here , many have failed Truck traffic flushed female off nest , and there is a piece of yellow rope in the nest, that’s extremely dangerous for talons but otherwise this nest does not have trash!

June 3 6039 baygirl 2 N 2 feeding, young standing
Note: Beginning to stand erect…. M brought fish, oldest nestling attacked second nestling so F fed it till 8:35 when it was satiated and its aggressive brain shut off, second fed at 8:45 as there was enough for it. M stayed on nest and that also seemed to distract the oldest. There are those that discount research and say that’s not food stress but top ornithologists have spent years studying sibling aggression. Just because there are fish deliveries does not mean a second or third nestling will survive. The deliveries must be plentiful. The fish large enough, the weather kind.

June 7 9842 baygirl 2 N 2 feeding, young laying down
Note: Crows harassing adults
June 7 4463 baygirl 2 3 N incubation
Note: On rewind overnight I heard and saw disturbance at the nest, sounded like something was attempting to climb the pole, F jumped to the t perch and was looking down. This is why predator guards are critical. All is well, no hatch as of 9 :07 am
June 7 6039 baygirl 1 N 2
Note: Female off nest, then went to marsh pond perch, 2 chicks close to thermoregulating spending much time alone on nest, common this season , sometimes the female is out fishing, sometimes cooling by skimming

June 8 4463 baygirl 2 3 N incubation
Note: Male brought partial fish, female was hesitant and vocal to leave but took it away, male incubating, appears to be a pip, hole, in the middle egg when he rocks down to incubate. Day 39 for first laid egg , males typically will not brood so let’s see what this male who loves to incubate does with a nestling , his second season with young
June 9 4463 baygirl 2 2 1 feeding, young laying down
Note: Hatchling revealed with the dawn! Let’s see what the male does, he was pulling at female feathers to incubate but she had a leftover and began feeding

Note: First feeding of the day just after 7 am. Hoping for 3rd hatch asap
June 10 4463 baygirl 2 1 2 incubation, feeding, young laying down
Note: Good feeding, hoping for the third egg to hatch very soon, of the many nests I monitor in the watershed, just 2 still show 3 nestlings surviving , once upon a time 3 fledglings at nests was common
June 10 6032 baygirl 1 N U feeding
Note: May be eggs but I have been seeing feedings , unable for a volunteer to know if there are still eggs when a female is brooding young nestlings
June 11 4463 baygirl 2 1 2 incubation, feeding, young laying down
Note: Couple good feedings already this morning, the 3rd egg is about 6 days laid after the first, if it hatches that far behind it will be challenged but this male has matured AND is able to find fish so far bringing regular deliveries. Good sign but it’s a long season
June 11 6039 baygirl 2 N 2 feeding, young standing
Note: 9:45 fish delivery, appears the second chick is now same size as oldest and the bullying is less, both fed well
June 11 8096 baygirl 1 N 3 feeding, young standing
June 11 6039 baygirl 1 N 2 feeding, young standing
Note: Both fed, getting nice white feathering on their heads
June 11 4463 baygirl 2 1 2 incubation, feeding, young laying down
Note: Plenty of feedings today. The piece of yellow rope is being tossed around the nest and was in the nest cup this evening. The end is fraying. That is very dangerous.
June 12 6335 baygirl 1 N 3 young standing
Note: All look similar in size, female quiet on nest with 3 chicks!
June 12 6402 baygirl 0 N N

June 12 6242 baygirl 0 N N
Note: See no activity this evening
June 12 4463 baygirl 2 N 3 feeding, young laying down
Note: 3rd hatch early this morning, feedings are regular, hopefully this tiny 3rd can catch up, the sibling aggression or lack of most anyway, will depend on the males fishing, so far he is able to provide, the nest proximity to bay and ocean may be in this family’s favor.
June 13 4463 baygirl 2 N 3 feeding, young laying down
Note: Feeding just after 6 am, all 3 fed, keeping the faith here. So rare to have 3 chicks survive to fledge when once it was common, this nest is one of 4 that I am aware has 3 chicks
June 13 8338 baygirl 0 N N
Note: No nest in 26
June 14 4463 baygirl 2 N 3 feeding, young laying down
Note: Good feeding for all 3 at 8:55 am , large fish delivery, male attentive
June 14 7459 baygirl 2 N 1 feeding, young standing
June 14 6039 baygirl 2 N 2 feeding, young standing
Note: Early evening fish delivery, oldest did not allow #2 to be fed most of the fish, #2 got a brief feeding before the fish ran out. I’m concerned as we head through the 4th week growth spurt that #2 can hang on. As long as the weather holds and make can be regular with deliveries this twosome might make it.
June 14 4463 baygirl 2 N 3 feeding, young laying down
Note: So far the male is providing well and this female doles out the bites in what appears to be methodically even tho that’s me anthropomorphizing. . I do feel she was more mature than her mate. This is his third season in the nest, second with this female and nestlings.
June 14 6814 baygirl 2 2 1 feeding, young laying down
Note: Single chick is well cared for, female dragged black plastic around nest bowl this evening , amazingly the 2 eggs are still intact.
June 15 4463 baygirl 2 N 3 young laying down
Note: No breakfast yet, High winds , NW gusting over 15 mph, we had a storm overnight, these conditions may make fishing challenging today, 8:04 aninterloper landed on females back as she was brooding, this is the time of the season when the late arriving younger adults can cause harm
June 15 4463 baygirl 2 N 3 feeding, young laying down
Note: Feeding about 9:45. Interesting to see how little fish the nestlings eat when I see female cleaning up the fish bits around the young. She keeps the nest clean but there’s no way to know at this point how much each nestling actually consumed. The female sometimes stops the feeding before chicks are satiated.
June 15 6814 baygirl 2 2 1 feeding, young laying down
Note: Male brought whole fish just after 1 pm, female and chick fed on it and after 2 pm male came back and tried to take portion of fish, female did not allow, so she and chick ate well from that 1 whole fish
June 15 7792 baygirl 0 N N
Note: Nest appears to have failed , possibly due to 6-13 storm or interloping rogue male, fighting at this nest and Seagrass nearby
June 15 6039 baygirl 1 N 2 young standing
Note: Have not seen any fish delivery or feeding of the 2. 4 week old chicks as of 3 pm, female off nest and not seen for 1 hr. This is a critical growth period and there’s sibling aggression, hoping these 2 chicks can make it, winds are gusting over 20 mph
June 15 6039 baygirl 1 N 2 feeding, young laying down
Note: Arrived home to see end of feeding ,female feaking , not certain if male brought the fish , if female got it and if both young ate
June 16 6039 baygirl 1 N 2 young standing
Note: No fish delivery, female has left nest numerous times but did not bring fish I have observed 4 + hrs today
June 16 7539 baygirl 1 N 1 feeding, young standing

June 18 6039 baygirl 1 N 2 feeding, young standing
Note: Just the oldest fed again today, it will not allow #2 even 1 bite, it fed on a good size fish for almost an hour , never filled up and never allowed #2 near the adult. This was only the second fish of the day , one delivered by female early today was only a small portion of a fish, I expect #2 to pass soon, I hope so as it’s not looking good. Its systems may be shutting down already. Will likely have a seizure soon, that would be a blessing. It appears the adult male is gone. High winds today were gusting Sw 35 mph, difficult conditions, rain possible tmr.
June 18 4463 baygirl 2 N 3 feeding, young laying down
Note: Feast yesterday, closer to famine today, not quite but there was only a few feedings due to weather, high gusting winds WSw 35 mph, the oldest is beginning to bully. This will increase. #3 is so tiny, I may not be able to watch very often. I’m seeing far too many struggling nestlings everywhere in the watershed, this is too hard to stay positive.
June 19 6039 baygirl 1 N 1 young laying down
Note: Female left nest around 8:50 during fog and rain and has not returned as of now, 12:30. I see the oldest chick laying in the nest. Have not seen the younger unfed chick today. This will certainly be brood reduction here.
June 19 9486 baygirl 2 3 N incubation
Note: At 9:51 the male pulled on females feathers as he wished to incubate, she left for awhile, I’m thinking she fishes for herself often as I haven’t seen fish deliveries. I neglected to note egg laying date but the first egg was not incubated for much of the first day and a half. At an early point in the season prior to this females arrival p, it appeared one of Hopes off spring from 2024 landed on the nest while this male was there. Not much interaction between the 2. I have not seen that female again but she is very dark on the head , much like the beautiful Hope markings. Hope was the most lovely osprey female in my humble opinion. Her 2 dark off springs fledged safely in 2024. I “ hope” I see one again someday. I believe this female was here last season. She seems to be maturing this season.
June 19 9486 baygirl 2 3 N incubation
Note: 11:16 male brought female a whole fish, she left and he took over incubation, then the rain returned. This is such harsh country for ospreys but perhaps it’s better than the coastal areas farther south where fish are depleted and brood reduction is the norm
June 19 4463 baygirl 2 N 3 feeding, young laying down
Note: Plenty of fish for all today, female supplemented at one point.
June 19 6039 baygirl 0 N 1 young laying down
Note: Female never returned today. Older chick rummaging around at times, calling for food , mostly visibly laying in nest, smaller bullied chick not seen today. I believe this nest will fail, total brood reduction. Very frustrating to observe a chick abandoned and not permitted to rescue it.

Note: Chick Laying in nest with trash blowing, then at 6:30 the chick appeared to be trying to eat, its trying to pull the food, not yet cork screwing to adequately tear what I assume is a fish dropped there by the adult mostly absent male. This morning I saw no adults but at 11:15 the chick sliced over the nest rim so must have had some food early before I woke up to observe. It’s unattended and not eating regularly. It is not safe. The trash in the nest is just one concern.

Note: #3 is getting less to eat, is not catching up and sibling aggression is increasing towards the little one, hard to watch.
June 23 6039 baygirl 0 1 1 young laying down
Note: Observed again starting at daybreak and have seen no adults. It is 10:15; still no adults. With permission from the TSBRR clinic director, given the number of failed nests and the fact that this 5-week-5-day-old chick has been orphaned, it can be taken to the clinic. I cleaned the nest of trash and checked the chick's keel. The chick is emaciated and will not survive, so I decided to send the chick to TSBRR for assessment and possible fostering.

There is a pair just 2 blocks south that were initially attempting to nest on a crane but that didn’t work out well, they are interloping now. I proposed a platform for the “ crane” nesters but the contractor thought it was cool to leave the crane in the parking lot. No platform discussed any further.

Note: Female begins moving the deceased chick around nest, flies off but brings it back, eventually pulling to the corner of the nest box. No fish delivery as of 7:30. In addition to fish stress, extreme heat, the possibility increases of botulism. Normally botulism occurs later in July but one symptom would be the head hanging that was noticeable with chick #2 prior to death, West Nile virus is another possibility. In addition there are wasps on the cam cover.

Note: Female left again and returned with smaller fish, about 25 minutes later male brought headless larger fish, first I noted him since this morning. I am unable to stare at this nest all day, but this is a common pattern seen at many local nests. Males providing less and less. They could be distracted and dealing with floaters. Good news is chick is getting well fed today and the female too!

July 5 4463 baygirl 2 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: Male finally arrived with fish just before female brought in a fish, both very wet, male looks thin. He is not providing regularly, earlier female brought in a large ? Shark? Not sure as I monitor from the field using an I pad. Female never removed #2 Carcass so it’s disintegrated into feathers. While I am no expert and this forum is for my subjective notes, for those reading, males are not providing fish regularly to many local nests, females are main providers, recently bringing fish quickly, sometimes 2 menhaden at a time. Menhaden are running off the coast so why are males absent, at some nests they have disappeared. Are they distracted by floaters? I provide my observations to scientists and listen to their reports.
July 5 6814 baygirl 1 1 1 feeding, young standing
Note: At least 5 fish deliveries by 1 pm, one delivery was double menhaden so I think they are running, , have not seen the male, if anyone watching please note if the male has been seen, do not want a repeat from last year

Note: 2 chicks appear about 5 weeks, using scope
July 22 6814 baygirl 0 N N
Note: Search of local active nest, territory and Bay Area does not show this fledgling present, hopefully its surviving at a nest somewhere. Ending data for 2026
July 22 8142 baygirl 1 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: Female dropped a fish to one fledge, both have not been seen together or near nest since 7-21
July 23 4463 baygirl 1 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: Continuing, tended by both adults, very fortunate !
July 23 4463 baygirl 1 N 1 young laying down
Note: Trespasser on the ospreys territory: I advise folks to not broadcast and map out where this nest is. In addition to those walking onto the field, there can be human disturbance from the office visitors just off cam. When the birds let out warning calls, it may be people or intruders from the air they are signaling. What’s seen in the cam is just a small part of their world. FOCHSP has not noted the exact nest location on their FB page for a reason. Certainly visitors to the park can see where the platform is, but social media doesn’t need to broadcast it.
July 24 7795 baygirl 0 N 1 young standing
Note: Full grown fledge on the V post of the nest, means it’s flying , it watches the chick at Bluecoast to the south nest
July 24 6337 baygirl 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Ad M on nest T perch, chick appears at fledge age standing on nest rim, I believe it has fledged, thrilled to see male with it. Interesting to see another Ad M on this males snag to the south, hopefully it’s the providing male for Nat Guard 1.
July 24 6335 baygirl 0 N 2 young standing
Note: One calling for fish appears very close to fledge, has a dark necklace and more dark feathering on head, second larger fledgling on nest, whiter head, whiter chest, at least 1 has fledged here. Concern for the younger bird as there’s been an interloping fledged with the 2 natal chicks. I never see an adult here recently.
July 24 6242 baygirl 1 N N
Note: Ad M on his favored tree perch, full crop
July 24 6814 baygirl 1 N N
Note: Possibly a floater or interloping male from the police dept crane or water tower territories on nest yesterday afternoon and briefly this morning around 11 am, this male is on extreme alert and not comfortable at the nest, I do not believe it’s the natal male.

July 24 6233 baygirl 0 N N

July 24 6233 baygirl 0 N N
Note: Found the chick dead approx 100 yd from the nest, appeared to be a male, emaciated, not apparent injuries, likely jumped from nest and not fed on ground. Starved as so many have this season.
July 25 12362 baygirl 2 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: Both adults continue to tend this approx 7 week old healthy looking chick
July 25 9842 baygirl 0 N 1 young standing

July 25 11250 baygirl 0 N 1 young laying down
Note: Hard to see but chick looks about 7 plus weeks old, should fledge by end of the month.
July 25 6814 baygirl 0 N N
Note: I checked the piling at the dock next to this platform where the adult male has always perched and ate his fish, often the female perched here too and their young, and I noticed there are spikes on top of the piling to keep birds off. This may have deterred the adult male from remaining near his nest this season.
July 25 4463 baygirl 2 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: Both adults brought fish today, as of 10 pm the adult female is not at the nest, this can sometimes signal her departure, let’s see what tmr brings
July 26 4463 baygirl 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Ad M brought prep fish to chick, 47 days old and looks very healthy. Not seeing helicoptering up to the t perch yet, and that’s a positive sign fior strength and fledgling. Ad F did not spend the night at the nest and not seen this morning…..
July 26 6239 baygirl 0 N 2 young standing
Note: Both fledglings quiet on nest, no adults
July 26 6042 baygirl 1 N N

July 26 7988 baygirl 2 N 1 young standing
Note: Male on platform next door, female and chick about 7 weeks old on tilted platform with no nest material
July 26 4463 baygirl 2 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: So happy to see the Ad F today after she spent night away, good amount of fish provided today by both adults. Female had quite a bit of blood in left foot and lower chest this evening, hopefully from the bluefish and not an injury. Chick is exercising more. There was an interloper that landed on cam, family escorted it off.
July 26 6039 baygirl 2 N N
Note: Female has returned to the nest after a eeek away, she is on nest calling to male, eventually he left and returned with a fish, he perched in the pine while she called then flew to him and back to the nest, after sundown he took her his partial fish but she continued to call into the dark. I am seeing some females returning to nest sites, perhaps the often seen reconnecting with mate prior to migration.
July 26 6227 baygirl 2 N N
Note: After a few weeks of no female, she returned and both are on the BM nest at sunset. Typical end of season behavior.
July 27 6026 baygirl 0 N 1 young standing
Note: Only 1 chick seen recently, it appears about 7 weeks and is in the hunched forlorn posture, looks hungry and just weathered thru a hard rain storm, hope an adult is tending it.

July 27 8014 baygirl 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Ad in nest eating , fledgling perched out on the marsh island post
July 27 4463 baygirl 2 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: Both adults at nest today, Ad F still has the blood on left toes and lower chest, she’s looking at her foot even more than an osprey typically does, hope it’s dried fish blood. Chick is going to need more muscle strength , has not attempted to heli to the t perch yet. T perch landing a good sign that fledge is coming, needs a good week I think …
July 28 8011 baygirl 0 N 1 young laying down
Note: Large chick laying in nest, very quiet, should be flying soon.
July 29 4463 baygirl 0 N 1 young standing
Note: Interloping fledgling landed on nest, a fight ensued. I believe since chick is hungry, last feeding yesterday late afternoon?, the chick pecked towards the interloper, possibly wanting fed, and as can happen with siblings, they fought, no injuries to chick are obvious this morning.
July 29 6814 baygirl 0 N N
Note: The adult male that has landed on the nest the past few days may not be the male for this nest. The males behavior is that of an interloper, long neck, extra alert, nervous. This is not normal behavior of a male bonded with its territory and nest. There are a number of other males near this location.

July 29 4463 baygirl 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Ad F returned this evening, crop full, she did not bring a fish, remained perched on nest for a few hrs, Ad M not seen today, chick will need to be fed tmr.
July 29 4463 baygirl 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Ad F still appears to have the blood on her lower chest, upper abdomen, hopefully she is not injured. Also hope her hormones not turning off, this chick needs more time, but even after fledge must have a parent provide.
July 30 6001 baygirl 2 N N
Note: Pair has been enjoying the nest
July 30 6006 baygirl 0 N N
Note: This platform not used when 125 platform next to it is active, 125,126 are same pair platforms
July 30 12242 baygirl 0 N 1 young standing
Note: Large fledge age chick at nest, I will mark as fledged as per Dr B Watts.
July 30 8351 baygirl 1 N 1 young standing

July 30 8013 baygirl 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Fledge age ch at nest, adult on marsh perch
July 30 7992 baygirl 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Fledgling on platform next to this platform ,adult on perch
July 30 4463 baygirl 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Ad F returned to nest this evening, blood still visible on lower chest area, she is not providing for the chick that now has not been fed since 7-28. Chick is showing signs of dehydration, puffed feathers, hunching, tacky look to tongue, beak. I believe poor nutrition has turned this mothers nurturing hormones off and without the ad M to provide, this chick will pass soon. This non nurturing behavior is not new to me this season, example: see Pine Needle nest. Females at nest, not feeding or foraging for their young.
July 31 8244 baygirl 0 N N
Note: I have seen no activity and at this time there would be larger chicks in the nest, I check this nest regularly, it is no longer active for the 2026 season.
July 31 5991 baygirl 0 N 2 young standing
Note: 1 much darker older and 1 younger fledgling on nest, will count both for this nest but could be 1 interloper
July 31 5893 baygirl 0 N 2 young standing
Note: 2 larger chicks, I will mark them fledged as per Dr Bryan Watts, end of season reports
July 31 11322 baygirl 0 N 1 young standing
July 31 4463 baygirl 1 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: Ad F brought 3 fish today, at least 1 was a whole bunker, all fish were in the morning hours , good to see the female has clicked back in, possibly she was waiting for her mate. I hope he is still alive, in the past few days 3 nearby adult Ospr found injured or dead.
