Note: | One adult could be seen at the top of the tower as viewed from Rt 29. I could ID as the female. I drove to the top of the drive leading to the farm to check the back side of the tower. She was the only osprey seen this morning. I will watch for her mate to, hopefully, return soon.

Note: | At this morning's check only 1 crow was seen perched on this tower. I will keep an eye open since the female of the other area nests had arrived.
March 22 | 3287 | DianeMC | 1 | N | N
Note: | As I drove up the long drive I could see a bird perched on the tower. Sure enough I could see a female osprey had arrived. Last year the male never did return. There really is no way to tell if this is the same female, but hopefully she has a mate show up soon.

Note: | I cannot confirm eggs or young because I did not see them. From the observed behavior, the female was on the nest. She lower her head several times. It was a warm afternoon with a very hot sun. If there are eggs or young, she was shading them and they did not need the extra warmth from her. I did not see the mate this visit. I believe from her behavior she is either incubating or brooding.

Note: | As I drove towards the fire station and tower, I saw 2 adults flying together away from the nest. They flew over the fields in the direction of the river. Unfortunately I was driving and had nowhere to pull over to take photos. If there are eggs or chicks, it is odd that both parents would be fishing together. I could see nothing in the nest from a distance. Studying the shot in front of the firehouse, it is difficult to say if there is anything but sticks in view. I will continue to watch.

Note: | It is good to see a pair of osprey back on this nest. Only the female returned last year. This nest is tricky to observe due to its location. The nest cannot be seen from the front side. The backside view puts me close to the tower and difficult to see inside. One adult was perched on the front side of the tower when I arrived. It was the male. His chest is very white with a few dark speckles. He seemed to be standing guard. I moved to the backside of the tower with a view of the nest. I did not see anything. As I drove to the front side again, I heard, then saw an adult flying around the tower. I caught the male coming in for a landing. I raced to the backside again. An adult flew around and then away from the tower over me. I thought it was an incubation exchange, but looking at photos, I'm not sure. I believe it was the male who flew, although his chest did not seem as white from that angle. I will need to watch closely and get a look at the female's "necklace" so I can tell for sure who is who. I checked the nest after he flew away from view, and yes another adult was sitting in the nest. I saw no chicks, and no feeding. I believe they are incubating.

Note: | I viewed the nest from several different angles and distances. No adults were seen on the tower or in the air nearby. If there were young, they were down and not visible during this observation. I stayed about 10 minutes since it was so quiet.
June 24 | 3287 | DianeMC | 1 | N | N
Note: | When I arrived I saw no adult perched on any of the posts of the tower or the nest. Since the osprey moved the nest to the backside of the tower, it is difficult to view. I drove to the backside, and finally saw an adult's tail and back. I could not ID it as the male or female since a post was blocking my view. It was quiet at the nest even when vultures flew nearby. If there are young, they were not visible today.
June 24 | 3286 | DianeMC | 1 | N | 1 | young standing
Note: | I viewed the nest from RT 29 today. I saw the female standing on the outer edge of the nest. She looked down several times, and finally a little head popped up. I saw 1 clearly. It is possible there is another, but it was difficult to ID positively.
July 12 | 3287 | DianeMC | 1 | N | 1 | young laying down
Note: | When I arrived the female was perched in her usual spot at the front of the tower on a pole. I drove to the back of the nest since I was unable to see into the nest from the front. I sat for some time, hoping to see the male deliver prey, and a feeding. No such luck. I thought I saw movement of someone between the branches of the nest. Finally a young osprey (speckled plumage) stood up and stretched a wing. I was able to ID it as a chick, but nothing more. I saw only 1 chick.
July 12 | 3286 | DianeMC | 1 | N | 1 | young standing
Note: | I observed from Rt 29 again today. I saw an adult perched on a tower post. I could not tell if it was the male or female since the bird sat with its back to me. About 10 minutes into my observation, I saw a head pop up in the nest. I watched for 45 minutes and saw no other chicks in the nest, nor was there a feeding. The chick was active in the nest, stretching and moving from one end to the other. There was no sign of another chick.
July 25 | 3286 | DianeMC | 1 | N | 1 | young standing
Note: | After recent storms in the area, I made a quick stop to be sure all was fine. I'm happy to report the nest, an adult, and 1 chick were all still on the tower. I had no equipment with me to provide more details. This was a quick trip.
July 25 | 3287 | DianeMC | 1 | N | 1 | young laying down
Note: | I made a quick visit today to be sure nests and birds were OK after recent bad storms rolled through the area. All was fine. I had no equipment with me today for ID of the birds. I did see 2 on this visit. One was perched on the side of the nest. It was hard to tell but I believe it to be the adult, although there was no way to tell if it was the male or female. One other was perched on one of the tower posts, laying down. I could see speckles on the wings, so it was one of the young.
August 23 | 3287 | DianeMC | 0 | N | 1 | young standing
Note: | This was a quick visit. The young osprey was alone in the nest. I viewed the nest from both front and back, and still only see the one. This appears to be a male. The chest had very little brown feathers on it, just a few in the center. Vultures were circling around the tower which the osprey watched intently.
August 23 | 3286 | DianeMC | 0 | N | 1 | young standing
Note: | I viewed the nest from both Rt29 and the backside across the farm fields. Only 1 bird was in the nest. It was a young one as I could see speckling on the wings. Its chest was not turned toward me so I could not tell if it was male or female. No other adults were seen on the tower, nor flying in the area. This was a quick visit to see if the young osprey was still there or not. |
