Hopefully Mom comes home with a fish or to feed as this is quite sad for the chick to have food and not be able to eat it. | Note: | Thank you for checking with the osprey expert, @lost_bird! The strange dynamics continued today. The good news is that none of the interlopers appear to want to harm the chick. The bad news is that only Mom is bringing the chick food. At one point today, there were three osprey fighting over the nest and I don't think any of them was Mom (though I could be wrong, it was hard to tell). This jives with what I observed on my walk yesterday. Mom was in the nest squawking very agitatedly, while 3 other osprey circled overhead. Could it be another pair hoping to take over the nest next year? Or other mates looking to take Dad's place? I need to be more observant in watching the nest cam and playback to tell who's who. Mom is the only one I know for sure. | ||||||

I was also wondering if the intruders could be one or more of last year's offspring returning home/to the nest. I've uploaded a screenshot of an intruder this morning, who has been hanging out a bit and did not bring food; the chick even seems agitated/shaking when they are at the nest and shooed them away at one point. I observed on replay today several (at least 3, I believe) feedings by Mom, and no other adult osprey at the nest. I am still trying to figure out if the intruder was Dad or another bird but based on the chick's and Mom's reaction over the previous days and separate incidents I think the bird was not welcome either way. The surviving chick at Waquoit has fledged, yet there is strange/aggressive behavior from what appears to be parents though we are still unsure. For Field Farm and Cecelia Ave, each chick is being cared for and fed by Mom ospreys, based on size and pronounced necklaces. The females are attentive, there most of the day. For Waquoit, it appears Dad is still providing the meals and Mom is nearby. It will be interesting to see what happens after the Field Farm and Cecelia Ave chicks fledge, and also interested to learn from observers who have been do this for multiple seasons. | Note: | I just observed the strangest thing! An osprey was trying to fish, and came into the water from a side angle instead of the usual feet first, plunging dive. It attempted this several times, and it looked like it might have caught one. It flew away very haphazardly, jiggling as if maybe the fish was flapping and throwing it off balance. Could it have been a juvenile learning to fish? It was much smaller than the other bird. I wish I caught it on video. | ||||||
