Description
Nesting platform is located at the western end of Chingarora Street in Union Beach, NJ 07735. Also mapped as OW 9374 when found in person. Located corrected. Ben Wurst note — there are two nests mapped at this location but the locations are not accurate. I believe the activity for this nest is for the other location (closer to the road, where you can see a platform via satellite imagery). This ID may for this nest, where there is a platform but the chick with the deformed bill was reported at the nest closer to the road. Will try to sort this out with Randi, who reported no young on the other nest (after they were incubating).

| Note: | When first arrived, male perched on edge of nest with female in nest. Male took off shortly after arrival. Female body posture and language indicate she may have newly hatched young and eggs. Observed her looking down frequently between her legs into the nest, seemingly interacting with something. Her position is closer to the edge of the nest with wings slightly spread apart. Observed her readjust/shimmy while looking down in nest. She is on very high alert, observed making alert calls when she spots any movement (including observer at considerable distance). Male responds to her alert calls, appears to be hunting close by. | ||||||

| Note: | One young here, only a bit smaller than adult male. Looks to be in poor shape, seems weak/tired. Observed male land with a tiny fish, female and young are both stressed, both eager to eat. Male fed his young approximately three bites before finishing the tail of the fish, which was no bigger than male's head. Both female and young are very vocally distressed. | ||||||
