Date Watcher Adults Eggs Young Observations Photo Edit
December 31 2 N N
March 26 0 N N
Note: nest in good shape but no osprey present.
April 2 2 N N
Note: One adult on nest tidying sticks. Later, two adults circling over nest area.
April 10 EricS 1 U U
Note: One adult standing on edge of nest the 30+ minutes I observed, so probably not incubating eggs yet. I thought I saw a second adult flying away from the next as I hiked toward it but can't confirm that, and it didn't return while I was there.
April 11 2 N N
Note: two adults flying over and fishing river near nest.
April 13 2 N N
Note: 2 adults copulating on nest. Third adult fishing nearby, chased by a Bald Eagle.
April 14 2 N N
Note: Female on nest calling. Two males flying and fishing, bringing her little fish. Copulation with at least one male at the nest.
April 18 2 N N
Note: One of pair flying and fishing, the other perched on branch near nest. Neither bird seen ON the nest.
April 23 1 N N
April 29 EricS 2 U U
Note: Adult pair active around the nest. Possible mating activity observed. One adult spent significant time on the nest while I was there, but much of the time neither adult was in the nest.
May 1 2 N N
Note: Both adults are perched on the tree but neither were on the nest.
May 2 2 N N
Note: Neither adult in pair consistently on nest. Sometimes one was standing on the nest, calling to the other one observed flying and fishing and then bringing a fish back for the nest-sitter to eat. Views were from me floating in my kayak on the river.
May 8 2 U N incubation
Note: Female on nest, incubating and calling softly to male.. Male perched near nest at 9am. Male successfully fishing upriver at 11am, brought the fish to a tree where he ate it presumably. Female still on nest.
May 9 EricS 2 U N incubation
Note: Eggs are likely. This is the first time this year that I have seen one of the adults actively sitting down in the nest. It's mate flew up after a few minutes with a fresh stick.
May 14 2 U N
Note: Male was fishing upriver between Benham Falls and the Slough and caught a nice 6-8 inch fish which he was carrying toward the nest but I can't be sure it got there. Female was on the nest presumably incubating, visible later at 11 am and not crying for food, so hopefully recently fed.
May 18 2 U N incubation
Note: Female sitting on nest, occasionally nosing around in presumably egg(s), not crying at male who was flying around looking for fish, so he must be bringing her adequate amounts.
June 11 1 U U incubation
Note: No male around or seen fishing upriver. Female on nest seemed to be nosing around in the nest, tending either eggs or young. Possible one young head observed.
June 15 2 U U
Note: Female left nest for a short while to fish. Male perched near nest, preend and ate. When female returned to the nest, she inspected it, maybe fed young, then stood and sat on nest. Male continued on preening and perching and then later went hunting upriver. No young were seen. Nest is deep.
June 18 EricS 1 N 2
Note: I observed one obvious immature bird head and think I also briefly saw a second one pop up. The only adult I saw was flying overhead in the vicinity of the nest.
June 19 2 U N incubation
Note: Female sitting quietly on nest, male fishing upriver near slough. 2 hours later she was calling from the nest, preening, and tending with beak to eggs, presumably. Male brought her a fish which she ate. No young observed.
July 3 1 N U feeding
Note: Male was not seen. Female was on the nest, preening, looking like she was feeding one or two young in the nest, and she flew off toward the slough to fish, leaving the nest unattended, and then returned a short time later.
July 6 2 N 2 feeding
Note: Dad was fishing and caught a good-sized one that he brought back to the nest. Mom ate some and fed some to the two chicks. Dad left the nest and went fishing by the slough. Mom stayed on the nest, calling softly a few times.
July 9 1 N N
Note: Only mom was observed standing on the nest.
July 13 1 N N
Note: Only Mom standing on nest, looking around.
July 18 1 N 1 young standing
Note: Adult flew from nest over river, calling softly. Returned and perched next to nest on a branch, overseeing nest. One young head in center of nest. Possible second young head low on side of nest closest to river, but could not verify. Adult and young were quiet.
July 19 2 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: One adult on nest with at least one big youngster. Another adult calling from across river. 15 minutes later, both adults were flying together over the nearby slough. At least one, maybe both taking turns, brought fish back to the nest. Youngster was standing and at one point, was flexing its wing.
August 3 2 N 1 young standing
Note: Mom was perched near nest and then on nest. She was holding up her left leg like it was injured for many minutes while perching. She called out to the dad who was flying around fishing but not getting anything. He chased after a young adult Bald Eagle who had been perched near the slough and then was flying. They had brief talon contact but then the eagle flew off.
August 6 1 N 1 feeding, young standing
Note: At 9am, youngster was on the nest alone, seemingly with something to nibble on. No adult in sight. At 11am an adult, assuming mom, and youngster were both on the nest, sometimes side-by-side, eating. Mom was often calling softly while they were eating. Mom seemed to let youngster eat first, then when it was full and laying down, she tore into the fish with gusto. No sight or sound from dad. Youngster has darker, redder eyes and many more white markings on its back. Adult has yellow eyes and a more solid dark brown back. Adult on the nest today was standing on both legs.
August 10 2 N 1 young standing
Note: Mom and youngster both on or above nest, both calling to Dad to bring home some fish breakfast. He was flying over water upriver and did bring at least one fish to the nest.
August 18 2 N 1 young standing
Note: 2 adults, dad out fishing, yellow-eyed mom perched in nest tree nearby the begging re-eyed youngster on nest.
August 28 0 N 1 young standing
Note: At 10am, youngster was perched on a branch in the nest tree and near the nest, preening and watching toward the slough upriver (where the parents usually fish), occasionally calling softly. At 11:30am youngster was on the same branch, hunched over, eating, a fish that was either caught by it or caught and delivered by a parent.
