April 16 CBEC 0 N N
Note: 53deg. wnds 18mph WNW Sunny. No apparent nest building. GR & PP
April 23 CBEC 2 N N
Note: 61deg. Sunny. winds 10mph ESE. Two osprey standing on platform. Many more sticks on platform than last week. A bald eagle swooped in and both birds flew off and landing on nearby tree. They began copulating for 2 minutes then separated. One bird flew away (probably female) and the male remained in the tree watching the platform. The female returned with a stick and placed it in platform and flew away. She soon returned with another stick and worked it into the nest. She then stood in the middle of the nest and nestled into the sticks. We observed for 45 minutes. GR&PP
May 7 CBEC 2 N N
Note: 72 deg. sunny, light breeze. Osprey pair standing on platform. Nest larger. 3 bald eagles seen flying overhead but did not disturb ospreys. GR&PP
May 27 CBEC 1 N N
Note: Single osprey standing on platform. Flew up into tree as I aprroached at about 100 yards. The nest size has grown. A bald eagle flew high overhead. I paddled back a considerable distance but the osprey remained in the tree. I did not see or hear a second osprey. I continued to observe for about 30 minutes. VR
June 4 CBEC 2 N N
Note: One osprey standing on platform and a second osprey in nearby tree. When I approached closer than 100 yards the osprey left the platform. I paddled back and watched for 20 minutes but neither bird returned to the platform. VR &PP
June 11 CBEC 2 N N
Note: one bird nestled in center of nest.. The second osprey flew to the nest with a fish and the nestled osprey (female?) stood with wings slightly held away from body. They both appeared to tear the fish apart and eat. I was unable to see if there were eggs or chicks. I paddled within 100 yards and both flew to nearby trees. I back paddled and waited and the female returned to sit in the middle of the nest after 20 minutes. These ospreys are more skittish of kayaks than I've seen before. I hope the campers give this platform a wide berth. VR
June 18 CBEC 0 N N
Note: 85 degrees, windy, cloudy. No ospreys seen on platform or in trees. We could not hear any ospreys. Unusually few birds seen at all. 2 crab boats working in the distance not near nest. Stayed 45 minutes well away from platform. V Reed & P Palmer
June 25 CBEC 0 N N
Note: 83deg. sunny. No ospreys observed on platform or in surrounding trees. Nest appears to be deteriorating. We can now see through platform base which had previously been covered by sticks. We watched for about 30 minutes to see if any osprey would return to platform. After discussion with JW we decided that no future observation need be done. G Reed & P Palmer
