May 20 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | U | N | incubation
Note: | More branches brought to nest in last 2 weeks - NE storms likely causing repair needs. 35 days since incubation is this Friday 23 May??
May 27 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | U | 1 | incubation, feeding, young laying down
Note: | There had been lots of fidgeting around on the nest over the weekend (35 days was 22 May, today is 27 May, so 40 days), possibly rearranging its contents, rolling cracking egg(s) around? Today Fred brought a fish to the nest and Wilma set about eating it IN THE NEST which never happens unless….then she started feeding 1 chick. Hoping for evidence of more hatchlings in the days ahead!?
June 6 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | U | 2 | incubation, feeding, young standing
Note: | Finally could see a second head bobbling around. Easiest to see at feeding time.
June 13 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | Wilma continues to fuss with nest amendments, adding sticks to the rim. 2 chicks often clearly visible now, stretching out wing “blades”, running across nest and up the side of the bowl. Fred brings fish to the nest more frequently than a week ago. Wilma spending some time out of the nest, off to the side in a tree keeping a watchful eye. She is also acting as beach umbrella on hotter days.
June 23 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | Fred continues to regularly supply the nestlings and Wilma with what appear to be larger and larger fish. I’ve seen several at least 3lb tautog and similar size bluefish meet their face-removal fate in a nearby tree, while the family awaits their “prepared” meal. The young are now more than 1/2 Wilma’s size. Since the birds hatched and the incoming fish were guppies by comparison and arriving 2x/day, the fish are now significantly larger, coming in to the nest 3-4x/day. The young started showing their flight feathers taking over from the hatchling fluff by the end of Week 3 post-hatch. In fact, they are so well fed there is never a greedy scrabble for food - all wait patiently to be fed.
June 26 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | Yesterday on 25 Jun - observed both Fred, but mostly Wilma “water skiing” (doing a pressurized-by-flight) foot wash, dragging their feet along the still surface of the water. He made 1 pass before perching in a shady tree. She made at least 4 long passes, dragging her feet in the water. Then she landed on a rock which was just below the surface of the water, effectively allowing for wading into a cooling foot-soak (it was day 4 of 95F+ weather, around 1pm - nearly low tide). She’s been diligently acting as “beach umbrella” to her chicks throughout the heatwave. Poor thing! Then she flew over and walked around on the sand (foot scrub?) on the beach by the water’s edge before returning to the nest. Fred was “baby sitting” from his perch nearby while she took this break for about 5 minutes. This morning (weather front came through last night, 30F cooler, overcast now) the more developed of the two chicks pointed its nose into the NE breeze and held out its scrawny but LONG “wings” and held them out for a bit and felt a bit of uplift, before folding them up and snuggling back down.
July 9 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | Seem to be able to feed themselves a bit now. Lots of wing flapping every day, both birds.
July 10 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young laying down
Note: | Feeding & flapping, preening new feathers.
July 15 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | This morning the family seemed well fed and content around 7am, with the nearly full-size chicks hunkered down resting. Then Wilma took off, for what I expected to be either a foot wash or a few exercise loops over the field, between the side rows of trees, but she took off due east, out over Mt Hope Bay. She was probably a mile out and she appeared to dive-bomb some cormorants that were in the water. She came around again, but this time put her feet in (NO DIVE!) and pulled out a sizable fish. She brought it right back to a nearby tree and started”processing” it. It was backlit so I could see the tail appeared yellow/orange with sun shining through it. It seemed to be a striped sea robin, 14”-16” long. It was so big - and she didn’t dive for it, just pulled it off the top of the bay!! Later one if the chicks flapped 30+ times. More flapping and nest hopping this afternoon, too.
July 18 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | We have lift off!! Bamm-Bamm managed to get both of his feet a couple inches up off the nest with lots of flapping. Pebbles also flapping more every day. They are eating some fish on their own, besides mostly being fed by Wilma. Both Fred & Wilma have been bringing in fish all week. Chicks are now about the same size as the adults, with their flight feathers apparently all grown in.
July 20 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | Photo L-R: Pebbles, Wilma, and Bamm-Bamm Bamm-Bamm flapped and got himself about a foot above the nest for 30 beats. Then, about 1hr after this Family Portrait, Bamm-Bamm fledged!! He flew around for close to 2min then landed atop his father’s preferred lookout perch. Bamm-Bamm then spent nearly 8hrs(!) there before finally returning to the nest. A long day without food!
July 23 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | Photo from 20 July - Wilma (top) checking on her son (below) during his 8hr marathon atop his father’s lookout perch after his 1st flight. Day 3 after fledging and Bamm-Bamm is now spending almost no time in the nest during the day. He’s usually perched nearby. Pebbles still flapping and hopping around the nest. No sustained liftoffs yet. Wilma now perching nearby overnight, not staying in nest. Both Fred & Wilma bringing fish to the nest.
July 26 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | Pebbles just fledged this morning!! This is 6 days after her brother. To succeed she used a totally different technique. He did a lot of straight up and down and sustained hovering. Instead, she opted for flaps and hops transiting the nest which got progressively more sustained and accurate. I wonder if in the last week her continued growth, which has taken her past her brother, had something to do with the delayed fledging? Other news: the parents’ preferred perch for cleaning the head of fish came down in the squall yesterday afternoon. I will miss it because it was so easy to see - and gave them a great vantage point to see their nest.
August 3 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | feeding, young standing
Note: | Bamm-Bamm has now had 2wks of flying. Pebbles is at the 1wk mark. Pebbles had landed upon and was checking out the heavily dew-laden roof of the Tea House this morning. She was showing curiosity toward the rivulets of water that were caused by her feet joining up individual droplets. Both still come to the nest for food. Pebbles begs more for food. Her brother, after she had been begging for >30min, showed up as Fred was delivering a fish. Bamm-Bamm more aggressively than I’d seen before kept her off of it, then flew away with it. This left Pebbles to continue her pleas.
August 11 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | young standing
Note: | Bamm-Bamm is ripping the lips off a fish up in the nest - I suspect he caught it himself! Pebbles is enviously looking on.
August 15 | 11165 | Shawen | 2 | N | 2 | young standing
Note: | The last couple days when a fish is delivered to the nest, both chicks are more inclined to battle over it. Each has a foot on it and a struggle ensues with lots of wing flapping and pulling. Lately Pebbles has been consistently victorious. Since I’ve seen Bamm-Bamm pulling the lips off a fish in the nest, I suspect he’s less desperate or hungry from being able to catch his own. |
