Date Nest Watcher Adults Eggs Young Observations
April 26 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 2 N N
Note: Their behavior has been odd with lots of coming and going from the nest, yet they finally seem more settle with both more often on the nest together and the female there much of the time.
May 5 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 1 U N
Note: After several weeks of acitivity and uncertainty about his couple, two osprey are settled in and the female has hardly left the nest in days. We were wondering if may initial mating was not viable as after nest building and mating, after a couple weeks, there was hardly a bird on the nest. In the last week or so there’s often two, mating observed several times, and now the female seems settled.
May 29 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 2 U N incubation
Note: After weeks of indecision, Harriet finally settled in for incubation. We didn’t think there would be babies this year after so much coming and going from the nest.
June 28 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 1 Y U incubation
Note: Harriet is moving around the nest quite a bit and possibly tending to young. No young observed yet.
July 2 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 1 N 2 feeding, young standing
Note: Two little Osprey heads observed this day! Ozzie, as always brings fish, but the fish seem to be pretty small.
July 4 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 1 N 3 feeding, young standing
July 8 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 1 N 3 feeding, young standing
Note: Three little Osprey heads observed. Harriet does leave the nest for brief periods. Ozzie still brings small fish. They are not bothered by me at all when I’m on the pier and not far from the nest. Harriet doesn’t even squeak at me. ?
July 13 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 1 N 3 young standing
Note: I was baiting the crab traps and on the pier for about 30 minutes, also hosing it down, which I thought would annoy Harriet. Harriet did not squeak at me at all and three little Osprey heads were watching me and quite curious.
July 15 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 1 N 3 feeding
Note: The babies are getting bigger and it appears that Harriet is making some nest updates to accommodate the bigger babies. Harriet is leaving the nest more for short periods and moving sticks around quite a bit. Ozzie doesn’t seem to be making a lot of nest visits, yet often seen in a nearby tree.
July 19 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 1 N 2 feeding, young standing
Note: The last couple of days I have only seen two chicks, the smallest and the largest of the three. Still hoping to see the third chick, which is the medium chick. We have not see the Ozzie the male in days. Harriet is doing the fishing and bringing small fish back tot he nest. We’ve observed an occasional osprey “flying by” and Harriet gets pretty worked up. Usually Ozzie would come out of the trees to scare off the intruder, yet no sign of hime doing that in recent days.
July 29 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 0 N 2 young standing
Note: We now have only two chicks in the nest, with the third no longer visable just after three weeks old. I knew something was wrong when two chicks were very activity and the third I could see moving, yet not standing tall. The two remaining chicks are named Simon and Rachel. Harriet is leaving the nest for much longer periods of time, yet not far away. Ozzie seems to be making more appearances lately, yet not a regularly visitor to the nest. Harriet does most the fishing and Ozzie pops in every now and then with a fish.. We’ve seem him more in recent days. Mornings aren’t as active with Harriet not being on the nest as much. Until recent days, the net was very active with the chicks eating and Harriet at the side. THe last few days, she been in a nearby tree in the morning. She literally just flew over our deck chasing off a Great Blue Heron. The chicks are moving around the nest.
August 9 9440 Ozzie & Harriet at Hale Pau Hana 1 N 2 young standing
Note: It’s been a whirlwind the last few days. The largest chick of the two remaining attempted to take flight and fell to ground. He’s living along our shoreline with Mom near by. Tropical Storm Debby has brought a lot of wind and super high tides, but there’s still shoreline for “Simon” to walk and Harriet (Mom) keeps a close eye on him. The other chick, Rachel is still in the nest and smaller, showing no interest in flying yet. These osprey are late season born. The male was observed last two nights ago during a storm, but I haven’t seen him since. He’s been kind of a dead beet father and we assume a new father this year as the previous male was very attentive to the family.
