Note: | Saw two osprey today, March 23, 2025 - a male first (I think) at around 10am, then a female with a pronounced necklace later, around 11am. It looks to me that the Ravens are not nesting on the platform this year, and these may be two separate individuals investigating and exploring the area, or a mated pair - I am not sure. There are Ravens in the area, though, and I saw one defending the platform area from two hawks at different times, so the osprey may have to fight to gain control. But they are here.

Note: | I saw one Osprey on the Cell Tower from the vantage point of White Lake in Hardwick, which is quite far away. It looks to me that somebody has removed the platform at the top of the tower, but the Osprey are building a nest on the round top of the tower anyway; I could see sticks there, even from that distance. (I am writing this on 4/20/25, because I neglected to make this entry earlier.)

Note: | From the distant vantage point of White Lake, Hardwick, I could see an osprey - the female, I imagine - sitting on eggs in the nest at the top of the tower. Obviously this is a supposition, but I could only see the osprey's head from where I was, so I'm fairly certain. It won't be possible to see any youngsters, though, until they are grown; somebody will have to get closer. I have a very long camera lens and it was still difficult to see the bird in the nest. It looks like they have been able to build successfully on the central round part of the tower, even with the former platform missing.

Note: | Unfortunately, the Ravens are still defending the cell tower area, even though they (the Ravens) are not nesting here this year. I saw at least two Ravens chasing an Osprey and a Bald Eagle out of the area. (One Raven was taking sticks from the top level, which the Osprey had added in previous years, and moving them down to the next level!) Not sure who these two Ravens could be, but possibly one or both are hatches from this nest in previous years? No osprey was able to land on the platform while I was there; at one point a Raven fiercely chased an Osprey (a male, I think) around the area for a long time till he left. I do not believe there will be a nest here this year - it's getting late, and the Ravens are not relenting. |
