June 7 Joey 0 N N
Note: On Tuesday, June 3 there was drama at the Mitchell nest. My neighbor witnessed four big black birds which I believe were black vultures sitting close to the Mitchell nest. There were no ospreys around. And on one huge swoop they descended on the nest. About that time an osprey parent came in and the vultures left. The parent was then, seen frantically trying to throw something out of the nest. There were two chicks in the nest before this. When I arrived, there were black vultures flying in the sky in the vicinity of the nest but flying away. Later, I could see one chick head and a parent was seen feeding the one remaining chick. Things seemed OK Wednesday, Thursday till Friday. Friday morning one Osprey on nest. Then Friday afternoon and evening no ospreys and I could not see a chick head. Saturday morning, June 7 no ospreys and no sign of a chick in the nest. Saturday noon one Osprey came back sitting close to the nest, but not on it. I could hear the osprey calling from my back porch. After lunch, I checked the nest again. There were two osprey and they were doing a fly over in the sky, moving farther and farther away from the nest as if to say farewell. A little later I saw one Osprey sitting close to the nest, but not on it. It took flight and disappeared in the trees across coffin creek. My thoughts are that the parents did not realize that one chick was deceased, but the vultures smelled it and came in. Maybe the remaining chick was still alive, but traumatized and died a few days later?? As of now the nest is abandoned and my heart goes out to these two us parents. I hope they will return and try to raise osprey babies again. The first season they were here 2023 they raised one chick on top of a boat hoist motor Last season 2024 they raised two chicks. I checked at sundown today Saturday 6/7 there were no ospreys to be seen near nest or flying around.
